Santorini needs three or four days, and for the caldera rather than the beaches: cliffs more than 300 metres high drop straight into a drowned crater, and Fira, Imerovigli and Oia sit right on the rim. One day goes to the path along that rim, one to the south of the island and Akrotiri, and one afternoon to a boat across the caldera.

July and August are the peak of the season, and sunset in Oia then means waiting on the castle ruins for hours beforehand. The same sunset can be watched from Imerovigli, from Skaros rock on the line of the path. Outside July and August you share the same view with far fewer people.

The beaches are volcanic: black sand at Kamari and Perissa on the east coast, and the Red Beach near Akrotiri, whose footpath has been closed several times because of rockfalls, most recently after the 2025 earthquakes, so you reach it by boat.

What to see

What to see in Santorini

  • Oia

The village on the northern tip and the end of the path from Fira. Below it is Ammoudi Bay, some three hundred steps down, with fish tavernas on the water — about twenty minutes down, and a slow climb back up in summer.

    free

  • Fira

The main town and the starting point of the KTEL buses to Oia, Kamari, Perissa, Akrotiri and the airport. The Museum of Prehistoric Thera holds the frescoes from Akrotiri, so it goes on the same day as the site.

    free

  • The Fira–Oia path

About ten kilometres along the caldera rim, through Firostefani and Imerovigli: two to three hours of actual walking, three to five with stops. Set off early in the morning, because there is no shade.

    free · 2–3 h (3–5 h with stops)

  • Akrotiri

A Bronze Age town under a large protective roof, crossed on walkways above the houses. Entry is €20, in a slot bought in advance.

€20 (reduced €10) · closed Tuesday, Nov–Mar only · booking: timed slot, advance

  • The caldera by boat

Boats from the old port below Fira go to Nea Kameni, where you walk up to the crater over bare lava, and to the warm sulphur springs off Palea Kameni. Only from below do you see how high the cliff is.

    €25–40 tour + €5 park entry · about 3 h · closed Nov–Mar · booking: recommended

Did you know

Two things you probably did not know

Science

The island is what is left of a volcano that exploded around 1600 BC and took the middle of the island with it. The bay that remains is a caldera up to four hundred metres deep, and the eruption is linked to the fall of Minoan Crete.

History

Akrotiri is a Bronze Age town buried by the ash of that eruption, with three-storey houses, drains and coloured frescoes. Unlike Pompeii, not a single body has been found. The inhabitants left before the volcano blew.
