Where to stay in Santorini
Fira sleeps closest to the bus and furthest from quiet, Oia sleeps furthest from everything except the sunset, and Kamari sleeps cheaper by black sand — all three sit on the same KTEL line, just at different ends of it.
- For a first visit / short stay
- Fira
- For the sunset and quiet evenings
- Oia
- For budget and the beach
- Kamari or Perissa

Santorini has no neighbourhood in the usual sense — it has three sides to the island, and each strikes a different balance between the view, the quiet and the price. Fira is closest to everything, being the KTEL hub itself; Oia is further out but carries the sunset; Kamari and Perissa are cheaper and flatter, with black sand instead of a cliff.
Fira — right on the KTEL hub
Every KTEL line starts from the station in Fira — for Oia, Kamari, Perissa, Akrotiri and the airport — making this the only part of the island you can leave from in any direction without changing somewhere else first. The caldera is right at the edge of town, and the Museum of Prehistoric Thera and the main square sit within the same walk. Prices are also the island's highest, since the accommodation supply here is the densest, but also the closest to everything.

Oia — further out, for the sunset
On the island's northern tip, about twenty minutes by bus from Fira. People sleep here for the evening, not for closeness to anything else — plan a day away from Oia and you add half an hour to an hour each way, since the KTEL line runs back through Fira rather than straight on. The drawback is the flip side of the appeal: once the crowd at the castle ruins thins out, it's quiet.

Kamari and Perissa — cheaper, by black sand
The east coast, flat and easy to walk, with black volcanic sand instead of cliffs. A dorm bed is €14–40, the same as anywhere on the island, but supply is denser and cheaper since demand is lower than in Fira or Oia. Both sit on the KTEL line from Fira, so a day in town and a day at the beach swap easily without a car.

What to check before booking
- A caldera view comes at a price. The same room without that view, one street back from the rim, is often markedly cheaper.
- Transport from the ferry runs to Athinios port, not to Fira. A transfer or taxi up the cliff is a separate cost.
- A 3-star hotel is €36–86 per person across the whole island — price depends more on the view than on the island's specific side, Fira or the beach.
- Imerovigli is a step further than Fira, on the same caldera path. The same sunset from Skaros rock, with fewer people than in Fira, but no KTEL station of its own — getting back to Fira means walking or a taxi.

Before you go
Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.
Which part of the island is best for a short stay?
Fira — every KTEL line starts there, so nothing is waited for twice.
Is Oia far from the rest of the island?
About twenty minutes to Fira by bus, but the line runs via Fira for everywhere else too — there's no direct route south.
How much do you save staying in Kamari or Perissa?
The bed price is the same as anywhere on the island (€14–40); the saving is in supply and lower demand, not the per-bed price.
