Santorini in 3 days

Day one follows the caldera rim to Oia, day two goes south to Akrotiri, day three goes onto the water, on a boat across the caldera. The order follows the side of the island, not a checklist, so the KTEL bus — which always starts from Fira — doesn't double back for no reason.

Where to go: five more questions →

This plan follows the side of the island, not a list of sights: day one is the caldera rim from Fira to Oia, day two is the south of the island with Akrotiri, day three is the caldera from below, by boat. Mix them up and the KTEL bus doubles back through Fira more than it needs to, since every line starts right there.

Day 1

The caldera rim: from Fira to Oia

08:30

Fira before the crowds — the main town and the starting point of every KTEL line. Free.

09:30

Setting off on the caldera-rim path towards Oia, through Firostefani and Imerovigli — 2–3 h (3–5 h with stops), entry free. Early, for the heat, since there is no shade anywhere along it.

13:00

Lunch in Imerovigli, or straight on to Oia without a stop.

17:00

Oia, sunset from the castle ruins; entry free.

19:30

Dinner in Oia, or the KTEL bus back to Fira, €2.20.

Day 2

The south of the island: Akrotiri and the black sand

08:30

Akrotiri, a Bronze Age town under a protective roof — €20 (reduced €10), Apr–Oct: Mon & Thu 8:30–15:30, other days 8–20; Nov–Mar: closed Tue, other days 8:30–15:30, entry in a slot booked in advance.

11:00

The KTEL bus back to Fira, €2.20 — the line runs both ways, not on to the beaches.

13:00

Lunch in Fira, then a second KTEL bus to Kamari, on the black sand of the east coast, €2.20.

17:00

An afternoon on the beach, then back towards Fira on the same line.

Day 3

The caldera from below, by boat

09:00

Departure from the old port below Fira to Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni — about 3 h, €25–40 tour + €5 park entry, a place recommended.

12:00

Back in Fira, the rest of the afternoon free.

19:00

Dinner, €9–18 for a main course.

Frequently asked

Before you go

Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.

What if I have four days in Santorini?

A fourth day goes off the island — by boat to Thirassia or Ios, both regular connections; not back round Fira or Oia again.

Can Akrotiri and the beach at Kamari be done the same day?

Yes, but you go back through Fira twice — no KTEL line runs directly between them.

Do you need to book a place on the caldera boat in advance?

Yes, recommended — places go first in peak season.
