From the road all you see is a huge rock in the sea, tied to the mainland by a narrow causeway. The town is on the far side, facing open water, and it only appears once you pass through the gate in the walls. The Byzantines called it Monemvasia — 'single entrance' — and that is still literally true.
Cars don't pass the gate. You park in front of it, or across on the mainland in Gefyra when it's full; in July and August a shuttle runs up to the gate every half hour. Inside are narrow cobbled lanes, stone houses, hotels in medieval buildings and not a single car — which you notice within the first minute.

Above the lower town is the Upper Town, in ruins now, reached by a steep paved climb. At the top stands the twelfth-century church of Agia Sofia right on the cliff edge, with a view along the whole southern coast. The climb takes about twenty minutes and there is no shade on any part of it — don't start at two in the afternoon in August.

An abandoned medieval town on top of the rock: walls, the footings of houses and the twelfth-century church of Agia Sofia, also known as Panagia Odigitria. You go up for the view, not the buildings.

The walk around the rock
A seaside path to the lighthouse, about half an hour one way, with places to jump in.
free · half an hour (one way)

Two things you probably did not know
Monemvasia is a town on a rock cut off from the mainland and joined to it by a single causeway. The name means single entrance, and the town is invisible from the road because it is built on the seaward side.
Malvasia wine takes its name from Monemvasia, from where it was shipped across medieval Europe. The name warped into malvasia and malmsey in Italian and English, and the wine itself only returned to the town a few decades ago.
