In brief

The 2025/26 Belgrade New Year's Eve was held on the Sava waterfront, free of charge, while the city centre had no official party. The 2026/27 programme has not been announced yet, so this is what last year's night looked like and how to plan around it.

New Year's Eve in Belgrade 2025/26 was not held on Republic Square, whatever the old habit says. The mayor put it plainly that year, saying there would be no celebration in the centre, and the organised Belgrade NYE moved to a riverside stage with a fireworks finale. The 2026/27 programme was still unpublished when this was written, so read what follows as last season's pattern.

Where the party was last winter

The main event of the 31 Dec 2025 edition took place on Sava Promenade at Belgrade Waterfront, next to the Galerija shopping centre, in the open air and with free entry. The programme ran from 20:00 to 00:30, and the stage hosted pop and folk names such as Goca Tržan, Aleksandra Radović and Senidah, with a Marković brothers orchestra playing the turn of the year. A multimedia show started at 23:55, which is the cue to look up at the Belgrade Tower, the tallest building in Serbia and the region according to the organisers.

At midnight the last ten seconds were counted down, a New Year projection lit the tower, and the Belgrade fireworks went off at once from the tower, from Gazela bridge and from the New Belgrade bank. A drone show was billed as the first of its kind in Serbia.

The old script, a concert on Republic Square, had changed already. The square still had a stage that evening as part of the winter programme called Beogradska zima, plus a daytime programme and an opera concert on the National Theatre balcony, but no organised countdown. Knez Mihailova Street, meanwhile, was full of food stalls, brass bands in Santa costumes and packed cafes.

When to arrive and how to get around

Aim to reach the promenade well before the programme begins at 20:00, and certainly before 22:00, because the road Bulevar Vudroa Vilsona was closed towards Gazela bridge between Nikolaja Kravcova and Ideja streets, while traffic towards the centre stayed open. Public transport followed the weekday timetable on 31 December 2025, with daytime lines running until 22:00. Night lines started at 22:00 instead of midnight, and vehicles with departures after 23:00 were taken off the route. There is no metro in Belgrade, so the walk home counts as part of the plan.

  • Walk onto Sava Promenade from the Savamala side, or approach from Brankov Bridge, which leads to the same stage from the other end.
  • Public garages and car parks stayed open round the clock on 31 December.
  • Food and drink stands lined the area, and the Winter Fairytale programme with a children's stage ran in the nearby Sava Park.
  • The fireworks were visible from the New Belgrade bank and audible across much of the centre.
  • Plan the way back on foot or by the night lines, since regular buses stopped early.

Instead of the crowd

Skadarlija, the old bohemian street in the Stari Grad district, filled with atmosphere from early afternoon, and restaurants in the old town offered a New Year dinner that depended on each place. Book a table there in advance. The riverside Beton Hala restaurants in Savamala sit a short walk from the stage, and the floating bars known as splavovi on the Sava and the Danube were a popular choice for a night out. An evening walking tour of the centre fits 30 December or the morning of 1 January, and the Sava and Danube sightseeing cruise of about 90 minutes sails past the Kalemegdan fortress, the waterfront and the bridges during the year, though nothing confirms a departure on 31 December. For a quiet evening, a restaurant dinner in the pedestrian zone avoids the queues.

Serbian New Year, 13 January

Serbia marks the Orthodox New Year on the night of 13 to 14 January, which makes it a second chance to see Belgrade celebrate. In 2025 the Belgrade Tower sent off three minutes of fireworks and a countdown, and a concert took place on Republic Square. In January 2026 the service at the Church of Saint Sava in Vračar ran until near midnight, and Skadarlija was busy from early afternoon.

First of January

What opens, what stays shut

New Year is celebrated on 1 and 2 January, both public holidays by law. Shops of the big chains were closed on 1 January, green markets did not trade, duty post offices worked and the buses ran on a Sunday timetable. On 31 December the chains and shopping centres mostly closed around 18:00 and markets worked from 6:00 to 19:00. On 2 January the chains opened normally, markets closed at 14:00, and the Sunday timetable still applied. Orthodox Christmas on 7 January closes most chains again. So 1 January suits a slow walk along Knez Mihailova and around Kalemegdan.

Where to sleep

For the night on the Sava, sleep in Savamala or at Belgrade Waterfront, so that the walk home takes minutes. For a walking trip, Stari Grad around Knez Mihailova puts the pedestrian street, cafes and Skadarlija nearby.
