Niš takes a day: the fortress is in the centre, the Crveni Krst camp a kilometre north of it, and the Skull Tower and Constantine's Mediana three and five kilometres east, on the same bus line. City buses are free for everyone, visitors included, and a second day belongs to the spa or the Sićevo gorge.
Niš is Roman Naissus, the birthplace of Constantine the Great, and its layers sit side by side: an imperial villa from Constantine's time at the eastern end, an Ottoman fortress on the Nišava, and the Skull Tower, which the Ottomans built in 1809 from the skulls of rebels killed at the Battle of Čegar. Without that story the tower is an odd wall; with it, it is the reason to leave the motorway for Niš at all.

Line 1 runs from Trg kralja Milana past the Skull Tower and Mediana to Niška Banja, and suburban line 18 goes to the Sićevo gorge. You only need a car for trips to Gamzigrad and Đavolja Varoš.

Niš Fortress
An eighteenth-century Ottoman fortress raised on the site of the Roman and Byzantine stronghold; entry is free at any hour. Inside are the Stambol Gate, the sixteenth-century Bali-beg Mosque, now a gallery, and the summer stage that hosts Nišville in August — best in the evening, once the heat drops.

Two things you probably did not know
The Skull Tower was built in 1809 from the skulls of Serbian insurgents killed at Cegar, on orders that it serve as a warning. Instead it became the reason travellers all over Europe wrote about the uprising.
Mediana, the imperial residence on the edge of town, has mosaic floors and underfloor heating. This was the suburb where Roman emperors stayed when they came back to the region they were born in.
