Where to go: five more questions →

Niš is covered over two different kinds of day, and the base follows whichever is next: the centre around the fortress and Kazandžijsko sokače keeps everything within walking distance, the area by Trg kralja Milana is where line 1 and the station both start, and Niška Banja makes sense once the second day is genuinely spent there, not as a half-day trip.

The centre — the fortress and Kazandžijsko sokače

The fortress, Kazandžijsko sokače and the bridge over the Nišava sit within fifteen minutes' walk of each other, so anyone staying just one day barely needs to ride anything. The streets around the old bazaar hold both the evening out and the morning coffee at the same address.

Near Trg kralja Milana — where line 1 begins

Line 1 sets off from here towards the Skull Tower, Mediana and Niška Banja, and this is also the closest link to the bus and rail stations. For an early departure the next morning, or a first trip that starts on line 1, this base shaves a few minutes off the walk.

Niška Banja — when the second day is spent there

The spa sits at the end of line 1. Staying the night there only makes sense when the whole second day is spent at the spa and the Jelašnica gorge; for a passing visit the city centre stays more practical, since the same free line reaches the spa either way.

What to check before booking

  • Distance from the fortress, not from the centre on a map. An address labelled 'central' can still be a ten-minute walk from the old bazaar.
  • The opening hours of the kafana downstairs. Buildings in Kazandžijsko sokače sit above bars and restaurants, so a night with the window open isn't always quiet.
