Over two hundred earth towers, each topped with a stone cap, stand on a hillside near Kuršumlija as if someone had lined them up on purpose — erosion shaped them over centuries, but local legend tells it differently: that they're a wedding party turned to stone, punished because a brother tried to marry his own sister.
The towers range from two to fifteen metres and keep changing from year to year: the stone cap shields the earth beneath it from rain, and once the cap falls, the column washes away fast. Admission is €2.98, paid at the entrance to the reserve.
Right beside the towers are two springs, Đavolja Voda and Crveno Vrelo, with an acidity rarely found in nature — pH 1.5 and 3.5 — and a reddish tint from iron and other minerals. Local belief holds that the water heals.

What to see in Devil's Town

The earth towers
They stand in two gullies, Đavolja and Paklena, divided by a ridge; the caps are andesite, and the columns run from half a metre to three metres wide. They take their name from the legend of a wedding party turned to stone.

Đavolja Voda and Crveno Vrelo
The springs sit right beside the towers. The water is drunk in small sips, not like ordinary water — the taste is what registers first.
included in same ticket

Kuršumlija
The town on the way to the reserve holds Stefan Nemanja's two oldest endowments — the monasteries of St Nicholas and St Mary, built between 1159 and 1166.

A short trail
About forty minutes of easy walking; with stops at the viewpoints and the springs, the visit takes about an hour. Wooden platforms and railings, nothing demanding, but walking shoes help — the ground is uneven and slippery in places.

Prolom Banja
A spa on the same mountain, known for its drinking water; lunch for Devil's Town visitors can be arranged through it.
1,000 RSD weekdays, 1,200 RSD weekends (€8.52/€10.22)
Two things you probably did not know
Two hundred and two earth towers up to fifteen metres tall formed because a stone on top sheltered the soil beneath it while everything around was washed away. They are still growing and falling. A few collapse every year and new ones appear.
The water from the spring below the towers is more acidic than vinegar and so heavy with minerals that nothing lives in it. That water is exactly why the slope has no plants to hold the soil together.
