For the Šargan Eight and Drvengrad in Mokra Gora you need to know three things: what the ticket costs, when the train leaves, and how much time to actually plan for. The Nostalgija train runs a 15.5-kilometre narrow-gauge line through twenty-two tunnels, with 300 metres of climb — an engineering feat when it was built, now a tourist attraction that sells out fast in summer.

The railway reopened for tourism in 2003, after years of neglect. In summer (30 March–31 October) the train leaves Mokra Gora at 10:30 and 13:30, with an extra departure at 16:10 during peak season (15 June–31 August); in winter it runs a shorter route to Jatare station. The full loop, including stops at the stations, takes about two hours and twenty minutes. The ticket is bought at the station and costs more or less depending on the season — worth checking the exact fare before you travel.

Drvengrad, the village Emir Kusturica built for the film Life Is a Miracle, has a separate, token entry fee — free for guests staying overnight. Its streets are named after Ivo Andrić, Nikola Tesla, Federico Fellini — even Maradona. The village has a cinema, a library, a gallery and a hotel with log-cabin rooms and woollen blankets, and in late January it hosts the Küstendorf film and music festival.

Science

The Sargan Eight is a narrow-gauge railway that climbs three hundred metres by looping in the shape of a figure eight. The end stations are three and a half kilometres apart in a straight line, and fifteen by rail.

Film

The village of Drvengrad on the hill above the railway was built as a film set for Kusturica's Life Is a Miracle and then simply stayed. Its streets are named after directors and writers, and it has hosted a film festival since 2008.
