The Masurian Lakes are covered from a single base, because the region spreads around two large lakes, Śniardwy in the south and Mamry in the north, with villages and fortifications set along their shores. That takes 3–4 days, and the base is Giżycko, where the direct train from Warsaw stops and the Żegluga Mazurska boats depart.
The gateway to the region is Warsaw (Chopin Airport, WAW), and from there it is PKP Intercity train, direct from Warszawa Zachodnia station, 4 h 32 min, ticket €16–19 (PLN 71–83). The train stops in Giżycko itself, which is why Giżycko is the base for the rest of the trip. The Łuczański Canal runs through the town, and over it stands a rotating bridge from 1889 that turns sideways instead of lifting; the roughly hundred-tonne structure is moved by one person.
From Giżycko the region splits towards two bodies of water. Distances to the main sights: Giżycko–Mikołajki 33–36 km · Giżycko–Węgorzewo 25–27 km · Giżycko–Gierłoż (Wolf's Lair) 35–40 km. The plan covers them with a rental car, and without one it relies on the Żegluga Mazurska boats and wherever they reach.
In the south, Mikołajki sits on Lake Mikołajskie, which opens into Śniardwy, Poland's largest lake; the village has a marina and a promenade along the water. In the north lies Mamry, the country's second-largest lake, with its sailing hub at Węgorzewo. The sailing season on the lakes starts on the first weekend of May and runs to the autumn regattas in October.
The third direction leads into the forest near Gierłoż, to the Wolf's Lair, Hitler's first headquarters on the Eastern Front, built in 1940–1944. The German army blew it up while retreating in January 1945, ahead of the Soviet advance, and the ruined concrete bunkers are now toured as a museum, with an audio guide.
Back in Giżycko, the shortest way to see the water without your own boat is the Żegluga Mazurska "3 Lakes, 3 Channels" line, leaving from the town harbour. The best time for it, and for everything else on the water, is Jun–Aug; May and Sep quieter.
