The Masurian Lakes in 3 days
The direct train from Warsaw gets in around midday, so day one stays in Giżycko and the car only comes out for the south and the north.
- How long
- 3–4 days
- Arrival
- PKP Intercity train
- Car
- €20–22 (PLN 87–97) a day

A three-day plan from a single base, Giżycko: the first day stays in town, along the canal and the fortress, the second drives south to Mikołajki and Lake Śniardwy, and the third goes to the Wolf's Lair and Lake Mamry, with a canal cruise before evening. If there is a fourth day, it goes to one of the day trips.
Giżycko, the canal and the fortress
Arrival on the direct train from Warsaw and check-in; the rest of the day is on foot.
A quick lunch, a kebab in Giżycko: €4.11.
The rotating bridge on the Łuczański Canal, from 1889, comes first on the way to the fortress, which sits right by the canal.
Boyen Fortress, a Prussian stronghold: €5.70 (PLN 25); €4.56 (PLN 20) reduced, May–Aug 9–19, Sep–Apr 9–16.
The Water Tower, a neo-Gothic viewpoint from 1900 at 162 metres above sea level, by lift or up around a hundred and thirty steps: €4.56 (PLN 20); €3.42 (PLN 15) reduced, May and Sep 10–18, Jun–Aug 10–20 (seasonal, May–Sep only).
An evening by the Żegluga Mazurska harbour, where the day-three cruise starts.

What can spoil day one
- The bridge only turns in season: operates 1 Apr–31 Oct; does not rotate outside that period. It can be crossed when it stands still too.
- The Water Tower is closed off-season (Oct–Apr). Travelling outside May–September drops this viewpoint from the plan, and the afternoon goes to the fortress.

Mikołajki and Lake Śniardwy
Picking up the rental car in Giżycko, then driving south to Mikołajki.
Mikołajki: the marina and the shoreline promenade are covered on foot, free.
Lunch in Mikołajki: fish soup €10.27 (PLN 45) or Masurian pike-perch €27.15 (PLN 119).
Lake Śniardwy, Poland's largest, from the public beaches: swimming is free, except at private marinas and sunlounger areas.
Dinner before heading back, a main course €15–16 (PLN 65–69, grilled fish).
Driving back to Giżycko.

The Wolf's Lair, Węgorzewo and the cruise
Driving to the Wolf's Lair (Wilczy Szaniec) near Gierłoż: entry €6.85 (PLN 30, season Apr–Oct); €5.70 (PLN 25, off-season), May–Aug 8–20, Sep and Mar 8–18, Apr and Oct 8–19, Nov–Feb 8–16, daily.
From there to Węgorzewo, on the shore of Lake Mamry: access to the public shore is free.
Lunch in Węgorzewo or along the way, then the drive back to Giżycko.
Returning the rental car.
The "3 Lakes, 3 Channels" cruise with Żegluga Mazurska, from the town harbour: 1 h 20, ticket €13.69 (PLN 60); €10.27 (PLN 45) reduced.
Dinner in town.

What can spoil day three
- A late start for the Wolf's Lair. The visit takes about 2 h (with audio guide); leaving later than 09:00 means rushing to Węgorzewo.
Before you go
Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.
