A half day in Bled is a plan the castle alone breaks, since it asks for at least 2 h. Two to three days is the honest length. The first goes to the lake, the island and the castle, the second to Vintgar and the viewpoints, the third to Bohinj or Ljubljana. The lake measures 2.12 by 1.38 km at 475 m above sea level, and the castle above it was first mentioned in 1011, which makes it the oldest in Slovenia by written sources.

The train from Ljubljana ends at Lesce-Bled, 4 km from the water, so the last stretch is an Arriva bus that takes 9 min and costs €1.50, paid to the driver. Bled bus station is three minutes on foot from the lake. The Bled Jezero rail stop lies 1.5 km out. FlixBus also calls here from Salzburg, Munich, Budapest, Prague, Milan and Zagreb. After 1918 the shore became a summer residence of the Karađorđević family, and in 1947 Tito built Vila Bled on it.

Start with the boat, because the first departures leave at 10 in the morning from May to September. The pletna is a hand-rowed wooden boat with the oarsman standing. It costs €20 return and leaves when full, while the electric Bled Boat Line sails by timetable for €16. The island ticket, €12, is paid separately and covers the church, the bell tower and the exhibition. The castle takes the afternoon, and the 6 km path around the shore fits in between. The cream cake at Hotel Park, on the menu since 1953, closes the day.

Vintgar is 1.6 km of one-way path with a helmet required and a digital ticket bought in advance. The gorge is busiest from 10 to 13 h, so go with the first slot or after lunch. The classic lookout over the lake is a 45 min climb through steep forest, and the Straža hill beside it has a chairlift for anyone who would rather not. Pokljuka Gorge is the one that wants a car, or the Bled Bus line that runs there in summer.

The lake can reach 25°C in summer and drop to 4°C in winter, when it sometimes freezes. Vintgar is open only from April to October. Winter trims the pletna to the hours from 10 to 15. The Winter Fairytale then fills the spa park and the promenade from 27 November 2026 to 10 January 2027. Guests of partner accommodation get the Julian Alps Card free in summer, with Bled Bus included and 10% off the castle. The guides below cover where to sleep, how to move and what to eat.

What to see

What to see in Bled

  • B

    Bled Island

The church on the island is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and is reached by 99 stone steps. By custom a groom carries his bride up all 99 if they marry there. Ring the wishing bell inside, then climb the tower for the view back across the water. The crossing is paid separately from the island ticket.

    Bled Castle

The castle stands on a cliff above the lake and is open every day of the year. A donation deed of 1011 is its first written mention, which is why it counts as the oldest castle in Slovenia by written sources. Inside are a museum, a printing workshop, a wine cellar and a chapel, and the courtyard and walls look out over the island.

  • V

    Vintgar Gorge

Vintgar is a gorge walk 1.6 km long, open only from April to October. A digital ticket has to be bought in advance, a helmet is required and swimming is forbidden. The shuttle to the gorge leaves Bled bus station every 15 minutes, which makes the trip simple even without a car.

  • M

    Mala Osojnica

At 685 m, this is the lookout behind the best-known photographs of the lake, reached by a steep forest path. The view takes in the island, the castle and the Julian Alps. Anyone who wants more height can go on to Velika Osojnica, which stands at 756 m.

    45 min climb

  • S

    Straža

Straža rises to 646 m and can be climbed on foot or taken by chairlift. A summer toboggan run of 520 m starts from it. At the top stands a memorial to Arnold Rikli, the Swiss pioneer who began health tourism in Bled. It makes a lighter alternative to the forest climb nearby.

  • P

    Pokljuka Gorge

Pokljuka Gorge lies inside Triglav National Park, 2 km long and 40 m deep at its finest stretch. It holds a waterfall 22 m high and a natural bridge 24 m across, and it is described as the largest fossil gorge in Slovenia. It is quieter than Vintgar, mostly because it is harder to reach.
