Hallstatt is a village in the Salzkammergut, a few hundred people wedged between a lake and a steep slope, with a salt mine whose traces reach back more than seven thousand years. It's the oldest known salt mine anywhere, though not worked without interruption since. The site gave its name to an entire period of the early Iron Age.
The thing to know before you go is that the village is small and the day-visitor count is not. The lakeside street is narrow, and at midday more people pass through it than live here. Early morning and after four it is a different place, quiet, with Lake Hallstatt free of boats and no queue at every photograph point.

The mine and the Skywalk viewpoint are above the village, reached by funicular. The mine is visited in a guided group, in overalls, and ends with wooden slides you ride down — usually the best part of the day for children. With time left, the ossuary beside the church, with its painted skulls, is a small museum of a kind few places have.

Two things you probably did not know
The salt mine at Hallstatt has worked for seven thousand years and is the oldest still in operation anywhere. An entire Iron Age culture, the Hallstatt culture, is named after the finds from it.
Over six hundred painted skulls with names and dates stand in the charnel house by the church. There was no land for a cemetery, so after ten years the bones were lifted, washed, dried in the sun and returned to the chapel.
