Hallstatt in 1 day
The lakeside street is empty only until ten — after that the funicular up, the ossuary and the boat across the lake keep the day moving while the tour buses pass below.

- The lakeside street before ten

This plan follows the clock, not a list of sights: the lakeside street is walked while it is empty, before the tour buses arrive after ten, and the funicular up and the boat across the lake keep the rest of the day above that crowd. It takes half a day; add Dachstein and it becomes a full one.
The street, the mine, the ossuary and the lake
The bus from Salzburg costs about €15 and takes about 2 h 15 — bus 150 to Bad Ischl, then local lines 541/543 to Hallstatt. While the village is still empty, the lakeside street is crossed without jostling; after ten more people pass through it than live here.
The funicular up to the mine and the Skywalk: a combined ticket at €49 covers both. The guided mine tour in overalls takes at least 3 h (funicular + tour) and ends with a wooden slide; booking is recommended, 9:30–16:00 (1 Sep–23 Oct 2026), last tour starts 30 min before closing.
Lunch in the village — €12.90–14.50 for a main course.
The ossuary beside the church, €2, 15–20 min for over six hundred painted skulls.
The boat across the lake to the station on the far shore, €4 (one way) / €8 return, 10–15 min — the view of the village from the water beats the one from the shore.
The crowd builds after ten and doesn't ease until mid-afternoon. The funicular up and the boat on the water keep the day above it; the lakeside street is only worth walking before nine or after four.

If a full day is left over
Dachstein and the ice caves are a different massif, above Obertraun, not above Hallstatt itself. Entry with the cable car and a guided tour is €50.20; the tour itself takes 50 min tour, plan half a day overall, but with the journey and the cable car allow half a day more. It runs 8:40–15:30 (14 Sep–1 Nov 2026), closed off-season (Nov–Apr), and entry needs timed slot.

Before you go
Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.
Do you need to stay overnight in Hallstatt for this plan?
Not necessarily — about 2 h 15 from Salzburg means the village can be visited and left the same day. A night here makes sense only if you add Dachstein or want to walk the street free of crowds in the evening.
Does the salt mine need to be booked ahead?
Booking is recommended, not required — but the tour takes at least 3 h (funicular + tour) and groups go out on timed slots, so a midday spot can be gone.
Can the mine and Dachstein be done in one day?
Yes, but the day gets long: the mine alone wants at least 3 h (funicular + tour), and Dachstein with the journey and cable car adds half a day more. Without a full day free, pick one.
