Where to go: five more questions →

Three destinations sit on the same bus line that reaches Hallstatt itself, just further along: Obertraun is closest and cheapest, Gosau adds one fare zone, and Bad Ischl is furthest, with a change of bus. None of them needs a train or a car.

Obertraun and the 5 Fingers viewpoint

The closest trip: bus line 543 takes 10 min, a return ticket €6. Hallstatt and Obertraun sit in the same OÖVV fare zone, which makes this the cheapest of the three. From here a cable car climbs to a viewpoint above Obertraun, looking towards Dachstein and the lake; the ride and the viewpoint entry are not in that fare, they're paid separately at the station.

Gosau and Lake Gosau

Bus line 543/544 takes 21 min; Gosau is already a second OÖVV fare zone, so a return ticket runs €7. The lake sits under Dachstein from a different side than Hallstatt, without the day-tripper crowd the village gets.

Bad Ischl

The furthest of the three: the bus changes line at Gosaumühle, 45 min in total, through three fare zones. A return ticket runs €8.80. Bad Ischl is a spa town, larger than Hallstatt, with a wider choice of restaurants and shops.

What to check before setting off

  • The fare is counted by fare zones crossed. The further the trip, the higher the price, in steps.
  • The 5 Fingers viewpoint and the ice caves are separate stops. Both sit above Obertraun but with their own tickets; going to the viewpoint alone stops there, short of the caves.
