Innsbruck sits in the Inn valley with the Nordkette range starting immediately behind the last street. The funicular leaves from the centre, and two cable cars above it carry on to the top of the range.
The old town is small and takes two hours: the Golden Roof of 1500 with its 2,657 gilded tiles, arcaded lanes, and the Hofkirche with Maximilian I's tomb and its ring of bronze figures. All of it on foot, and free apart from the church and the museums.

What keeps you a second day is the Nordkette. Up top there is the whole city seen from above, walking trails and, in winter, skiing. Innsbruck hosted the Winter Olympics in 1964 and 1976, so the Bergisel ski jump is in the city too and can be visited.

Two things you probably did not know
The Golden Roof of 1500 is covered with 2,657 gilded copper tiles. Maximilian I had it built so he could watch tournaments in the square from the balcony beneath it.
From the main square a cable car reaches two thousand metres in about twenty minutes, with no bus in between. Innsbruck is the only city to have hosted both the Winter Olympics and the Winter Paralympics twice.
