Mistakes everyone makes in Innsbruck

Ambras is shut for all of November, Bergisel is closed on Tuesdays out of season, and cheese fondue is not served without notice — mistakes that cost a day or a dinner here.

Where to go: five more questions →

Most mistakes in Innsbruck are not about money but about the wrong day, or a wrong assumption about what sits where — a closed month, a closed day of the week, or a castle mixed up with a museum in another town. The six below are easy to avoid once you know about them.

Ambras shut for all of November

Ambras Castle doesn't close on one day of the week but for a whole month — November (the whole month). Plan a visit right then, and you go without the castle for the entire week, not just that day.

Bergisel on a Tuesday out of season

Bergisel doesn't keep the same hours all year: Tuesday (November–May); open daily June–October. Arrive on a Tuesday in winter or spring and you see the ski jump only from outside.

The Hofkirche on a Sunday morning

The Hofkirche keeps different hours on Sundays: Mon–Sat 9am–5pm (last entry 4.30pm), Sun & holidays 12.30–5pm. Put the church on a Sunday morning and you wait at a locked door until midday.

Cheese fondue without notice, or for one

Tyrolean cheese fondue (€31 (per person)) needs notice at least two hours ahead and at least two guests. Turn up alone, or without calling ahead, and the menu that evening has no fondue on it.

Ambras and Swarovski mixed up as the same place

Ambras Castle sits on a hill above Innsbruck itself; Swarovski Crystal Worlds is a different place, in neighbouring Wattens — the shuttle there takes 30 min. Plan both for the same afternoon without that ride in mind, and you reach only one of them.

The Innsbruck Card bought for the Nordkette alone

A ticket for the Nordkette alone is €56, and the 24-hour Innsbruck Card €69 — a little more, but worth it only if the Hofkirche, Bergisel or one of the other twenty-two museums are added to the mountain on the same day. Going up the mountain and nothing else, the card is an overpay.
