The best time to visit Hallstatt
Hallstatt has no real dry season — rainy days come at nearly the same rate from January to December, so the month decides temperature and crowds, not whether it rains.
- Best
- May–Jun, Sep–Oct
- Wettest
- May, about 21 rainy days
- Coldest
- January, averaging 1.4°C

Two things decide the month for a Hallstatt trip. Temperature, and how crowded the village gets with day visitors. Rain doesn't choose. It falls at nearly the same rate every month of the year, since the village sits in an Alpine valley with no dry season. The exact numbers by month are in the table below.
Month by month
Temperature is the mean over the whole day (not the daily high), and a rainy day has at least 1 mm of rain; averages for 2021–2024.
Rain doesn't tell the months apart
Rainy days run between 13 and 21 a month, all year round. May and August sit at the top with 20 or more, February and October are driest with 13. The gap between the wettest and driest month is only eight days, so the rain jacket gets packed regardless of the calendar.

Dachstein runs a shorter season
The Dachstein ice caves run 8:40–15:30 (14 Sep–1 Nov 2026) and close off-season (Nov–Apr). Anyone planning that extension works inside that window. Off-season, the cable car doesn't reach the caves.

The ossuary off-season
The ossuary runs Jun–Sep: daily 10–18 in summer; off-season it is closed none (Apr–Oct); Mon–Tue off-season (Nov–Mar), so that part of the year keeps shorter hours than the rest of the village.
