The best time to visit Devil's Town
The reserve is open eight months a year, and spring and autumn strike the best balance of temperature and rain — the table below gives the exact numbers.
- Best
- spring and autumn
- Hottest
- August, average of daily means 24.1°C
- Coldest
- January, average of daily means 2.5°C

Two things pick the month for Devil's Town: whether the reserve is even open, and how hot the shadeless trail gets. spring and autumn deliver both — the reserve runs, and the temperature stays clear of extremes. What July or January actually mean in degrees and rainy days is in the table below.
Month by month
Average of daily means and rainy days per month, 2021–2024 (Open-Meteo) — not individual records.
Winter is closed
closed December–March. The trail to the towers is wooden and runs past two acidic springs — the reserve is out of service before any of that becomes a question of snow or ice.
Summer is hottest, with no shade on the trail
July and August hold the highest temperatures of the year and the fewest rainy days — but the trail through the gullies has no shade. Spring and autumn stay almost as dry without that heat, while May and June, though milder, carry twice the rainy days.
