In brief

Florence spreads its New Year's Eve over two squares, with a free concert on Piazza Santa Croce and the countdown on Piazza della Signoria. This is how the night runs, how to get home and what to do if the crowds are too much.

New Year's Eve in Florence has no single square, and the first decision is which part of the night matters more to you. The free concert of the 2025/26 edition filled Piazza Santa Croce for the whole evening, while the countdown was projected onto the façade of Palazzo Vecchio on Piazza della Signoria, so the choice is between a whole evening of music and the single moment of midnight.

Where the city celebrates: Piazza Santa Croce

  • Piazza Santa Croce held the free concert, run by the city with Fondazione MUS.E and Sky, and broadcast live on Sky TG24. Concert hours: 9 pm to 1 am (2025/26 edition).
  • Piazza della Signoria took the countdown, shown on the front of Palazzo Vecchio together with the Florence Lights Up video mapping.
  • Piazza Santissima Annunziata hosted Gospel Symphony, an orchestra with two gospel choirs, from 22.30 to 1 am in 2025/26.
  • Piazza del Carmine put on jazz with Fabrizio Bosso from 22.30 to 0.45, free until the seats ran out.
  • Piazza Santo Spirito staged Oltrarno on the road, the neighbourhood's own night of music.

When to arrive and what is closed

The city had not published a programme for 31 December 2026 when this was written, so everything here describes 2025/26 and shows the shape of the night more than its exact hours. Traffic went first. The extended ZTL, the limited traffic zone, with parking bans and closed roads around Santa Croce, applied: 7:30 am on 31 Dec to 8 am on 1 Jan (2025/26 edition). Public space then had its own rules. Firecrackers were banned across the whole built-up area, and glass, whether a drink to go or simply carrying a bottle, was banned inside the UNESCO zone: 7 pm on 31 Dec to 7 am on 1 Jan (2025/26 edition). Barriers also went up around the Arengario, the Biancone and the Duomo, so reaching the squares meant walking in from the edges.

Getting around that night

The tram was the backbone of the night. Lines T1 and T2 ran without a break: all night, every 10 minutes (2025/26 edition). Buses were thinner, and they needed a ticket from the AT BUS app, contactless, TABNET or SMS. They ran on routes 6, 11, 14, 17 and 23: 8:30 pm to 2:30 am, every 30 minutes (2025/26 edition). A free shuttle between Oltrarno and Piazzale Michelangelo ran every 15 minutes or so in the same window. Lines C1 to C4 stopped at 10 pm, which makes them useless for coming home. The plan is simple: be at a tram stop before the last bus leaves, because after that the tram is the only dependable ride.

Midnight on the Signoria and the fireworks myth

The Florence fireworks over the Arno and the Ponte Vecchio at midnight are a popular idea, and the official 2025/26 programme does not list them. It names concerts, a countdown and video mapping, and the ban on pyrotechnics across the city points the same way. One private guide describes fireworks near the Ponte Vecchio, but no official or newspaper source backs it, so plan for the countdown on Palazzo Vecchio instead. Italians mark Capodanno with cotechino and lentils, the lentils standing in for coins, and with red underwear for luck. Both are national customs, and nothing makes them specifically Florentine.

Plan B

A view or a seat instead of a square

For a calmer night, climb to Piazzale Michelangelo and watch the city from above, reaching it by the free shuttle from Oltrarno. In 2025/26 the Annunziata and Carmine concerts were the smaller squares to try, since jazz and gospel suit a cold night better than a crush. If you would rather sit, the Viator listing New Year's Eve Opera Performance 2026 offers about two hours of opera in the church of Santa Monaca with sparkling wine, starting at 10 pm. Book this one ahead, since a seat is the only way to guarantee a place.

1 January

The new year begins slowly. The Duomo complex shuts on certain days, and its monuments stay closed on them: 25 December, 1 January and Easter Sunday. For the Uffizi, the museum's own site, uffizi.it, carries the holiday hours. The one sure plan is the New Year's concert of the Orchestra della Toscana at Teatro Verdi, on 1 Jan 2027 at 5 pm. The programme, titled Heroes, Heroines and Anti-heroes, runs through Beethoven, Verdi and Puccini under Alessandro Bonato. Tickets cost from €15 to €35 through Ticketone and the Teatro Verdi box office, with a €2 surcharge per ticket for buying in advance. Museums such as the Accademia are better left for 2 January.

Where to sleep

Sleep near a tram stop, because the tram was the one service that ran all night, and book early. The page on which area suits you best covers the districts in more detail.
