Where to go: five more questions →

Florence has its own airport, Amerigo Vespucci (FLR), five kilometres from the centre and linked by tram straight to the station. Low-cost flights often land further off, in Pisa (PSA), where there's no real shortcut — the route runs through two separate tickets and takes an hour and a half longer than FLR.

A tram straight into the centre

Amerigo Vespucci airport sits five kilometres from the centre and is linked by the T2 tram, which runs straight to the Alamanni stop, a step from Santa Maria Novella. The ride takes about 17 min, the fare is €2 — the same as any city-transport ride, with no airport surcharge. The tram runs often, so no timetable is needed.

Pisa airport (PSA)

A cheaper flight, a longer way in

Low-cost routes often land in Pisa, 69 kilometres from Florence. From there, there's no shortcut: PisaMover, an automated shuttle railway, runs from the terminal to Pisa Centrale station in about 5 min, fare €6. From Pisa Centrale a regional train runs to Florence, about 1 h, fare €9.80. Count on about an hour and a half from the terminal to Santa Maria Novella in all, against about 17 min from FLR.

Which airport to pick

FLR is closer and simpler whenever the flight exists — one ticket, one tram, no changes. PSA has more low-cost routes and destinations, at the cost of a longer ride with a change. For a short stay, the fare difference rarely justifies the extra hour and a half; for a week or more, the saving on the flight usually covers it.

  • PisaMover and the train are two separate tickets. There's no combined fare from Pisa airport to Florence; both are bought separately, at a machine at each station.
