Ljubljana spreads its New Year's Eve over four free squares in the old town instead of one stage. This page covers what each square played last season, when to arrive and how to get home afterwards.
The picture of one huge stage and a single countdown does not fit New Year in Ljubljana, because the old town runs four separate open-air programmes, each with its own kind of music. They are listed for 31 Dec 2026 – 1 Jan 2027, running 21:00 to 02:30, and entry costs nothing at any of them. Choose the square by the music you like, and the rest of the night mostly arranges itself on foot, because the four programmes sit close together in the old town and nobody needs a ticket to wander between them.
Where the night happens
Congress Square carried the main programme, and Visit Ljubljana called it the main silvestrovanje in 2025. That is the local word for a New Year's Eve party, and it is the name on the city's own event listing. The 2025/26 programme there was popular music, with Miki Vlahovič & The Band, Vlado Kreslin and Učiteljice on the bill. Mestni trg, Trg francoske revolucije and Pogačar Square held the other three programmes that season, all in the old town. Venues and performers for 2026/27 have not been announced, so read every name here as last year's line-up and the map as a likely pattern.
- Congress Square carried the main programme of 2025/26, with popular music and the three acts named above.
- Mestni trg, which means Town Square, hosted one of the four programmes in the same season.
- Trg francoske revolucije, or French Revolution Square, belonged to rock and alternative music in 2025/26.
- Pogačar Square offered popular music and narodnozabavna, the Slovenian dance-floor folk style, in 2025/26.
When to arrive and how long it runs
The programmes are listed for 31 Dec 2026 – 1 Jan 2027, running 21:00 to 02:30, so nothing begins at dinner time and the party runs well past midnight. In the 2025/26 edition the children's programme on Congress Square opened at 16:00, with a symbolic entry into the new year for the little ones at 17:00. The evening programmes began at 21:00, and Pogačar Square started half an hour earlier, at 20:30. Come for the early part if you want a place near the stage and a walk through the old town while it is still light. Make Congress Square your first stop, and drift to the other three once the first set ends.
For 2026/27 the city has published only the dates and the hours. Venues, performers and the fireworks are still to come, so look at Visit Ljubljana before you book anything around them.
Midnight and the fireworks
Midnight belongs to the castle. In 2025/26 the countdown took place on the tower of Ljubljana Castle, which sits on its hill above the old town, and the Ljubljana fireworks from Castle Hill lasted five minutes, made with biodegradable materials and visible from several squares and streets (Visit Ljubljana, 15 December 2025). A 2024 report by the news site 24ur said that most Slovenian municipalities had given up fireworks while Ljubljana kept its show. Whether it returns for 2026/27 has not been announced. Plan the night around the squares and treat the sky as a bonus, but keep the castle hill in sight when the countdown starts.
Getting home at night
LPP, the city bus operator, ran buses all night on New Year's Eve in 2025/26, according to Visit Ljubljana. In the same season the night lines ran for an extra hour past midnight over the holidays, and rides were free after 17:00, as one news source reported in 2025. Read that as last season's detail, because the 2026/27 timetable has not been published, and no one should plan a night around a free ride that may not return. The old town is largely pedestrian, so leave the car outside the centre.
A quieter option
For a calmer hour, climb to Ljubljana Castle and look over the roofs of the old town. The funicular costs €6 for a return ticket, and the castle's own site, ljubljanskigrad.si, lists the hours for the holiday days. Cankar Embankment and Breg run along the Ljubljanica with no stage at all, just the water and the people walking past. If the crowd is too much, go to Breg.
1 January
New Year's Day and the day after are public holidays in Slovenia, so most shops stay shut and the city wakes slowly. Congress Square still had performances on New Year's Day in the 2025/26 edition. The Festive December programme runs for 27 Nov 2026 – 14 Jan 2027, and the stalls of the Advent market are listed for 27 Nov 2026 – 3 Jan 2027. Buy what you need before the holiday, and keep the morning for the river walk.
Where to stay
The old town can be crossed on foot, so a room inside it means no waiting for transport after midnight, no queue for a taxi and no calculation of the last bus while the party is still going. Book early. Districts are compared on the stays page.

With one night, Congress Square is the answer, because it carried the main programme in 2025/26 and the headline names. Anyone who dislikes crowds should pick Pogačar Square or Trg francoske revolucije by the music instead.
Check the same room on both sites: price and cancellation terms can differ.
Slovenia, in brief
What now
If this sounds like your trip, start here.

Ljubljana
→Slovenia’s capital with no cars in the centre: Plečnik’s bridges, a riverside market and a castle on the hill

Ljubljana in 3 days
→The Old Town and castle on day one, Plečnik and Tivoli on day two, Bled or Postojna on day three, and Monday changes the order.

Day trips from Ljubljana

Where to stay in Ljubljana
→The Old Town for walkers, Metelkova for price and nights out, Tivoli for greenery, airport hostels for early flights.

→A 1933 skyscraper with a café on top, a hill with a church above the city and a Friday when the market turns into a kitchen.

What to eat in Ljubljana
→A Carniolan sausage on the square, jota for lunch, štruklji after, and on Fridays the market turns Pogačarjev trg into a kitchen.

The best time to visit Ljubljana
→May and June for walking, July and August for the river and the heat, autumn for rain and fog, winter for the fair and the cafés.
