Ljubljana

In Ljubljana the neighbourhood decides how much you walk, and the price follows only loosely. The centre is small and has been shut to cars since September 2007. So the real choice is between the calm of the Old Town and the cheaper beds on its edge. Nothing in the middle is more than a stroll away, and the only thing that suffers on the cobbles is a suitcase.

The Old Town and Prešeren Square: for walkers

Stay here on a first visit without a car. The Old Town stands on the site of Roman Emona, founded around 50 BC, and was rebuilt in the Renaissance after the earthquake of 1511, so the lanes carry layers that newer districts lack. Prešeren Square has the poet’s monument of 1905. Since September 2007 the centre has been closed to motor traffic, apart from residents with a permit, which is why the lanes along the Ljubljanica belong to café tables and bicycles. Kavalir, a small electric vehicle that runs free in the pedestrian zone, carries older visitors and anyone with limited mobility. A taxi can only bring you to the edge of the zone, so the last stretch to the hotel door is on foot, and light luggage makes that stretch pleasant.

The Triple Bridge and the river are the draw, and in the evening the crowd gathers around the bridge. Ask for a room on a side lane if you sleep lightly. Mestni trg and the Dragon Bridge from 1901 are a few minutes away, so the evening walk needs no plan at all.

Metelkova and the station: price and nights out

Metelkova is a former barracks built in 1882 and occupied in September 1993, and today it holds galleries and clubs. Seven buildings stand on about 12,500 m², and the site has been national cultural heritage since 2005. Hotel Celica uses part of the old buildings. Expect noise at weekends, because the clubs around it keep their own hours.

The cheapest bed in the city was at C-punkt when the hostels were compared in October 2026: from €12 (dorm bed). Fluxus and Celica are the other two names worth a look. The hostels around the bus and railway station include C-punkt, Fluxus, Most and Simbol, and the station itself sits on the edge of the centre, which suits a late arrival. Everything else is a short walk.

Tivoli and Rožnik

Greenery away from the centre

Tivoli is the city park, about 5 km² with the hill of Rožnik. Hostel Tivoli and Tivoli Parkside are the two names, and both stand at the edge of the greenery, with mornings free of traffic. The Old Town is a walk away.

Near the airport

Only for an early flight

Mamas House stands near the airport, 26 km from the centre, and it is useful for one reason only, which is a flight that leaves before the first bus. The airport bus to the central station costs €4.10 and takes about 45 min. The Nomago shuttle is the other way in, from from €12. Sleep in the centre for every other night.

The tax and when to book

The tourist tax is €3.13 per person per night, made up of a base tax and a promotional surcharge of 25 percent. A reduced rate applies from ages 7 to 18, to guests in IYHF hostels and to campsites, and children under 7 are exempt. The Christmas market and lights run from 27 November 2026 to 14 January 2027, so those weeks pull demand upward, and an early booking is simply good sense.
