In brief

Ljubljana's Advent market runs as a string of stalls along the river, from Prešeren Square to Breg. This is where they stand, what is sold, and the order for one evening on foot.

Finding the Christmas market in Ljubljana means walking, because the stalls are spread through the old town along the Ljubljanica and no single square holds them. If you have one evening, stay by the river between Breg and Prešeren Square, where the stalls and the lights are, and let the rest wait. The season is listed for 27 Nov 2026 – 3 Jan 2027, and entry is free everywhere.

Where the stalls are, and where the crowd is

The city lists seven places, which is why the market feels like a route. Prešeren Square and Breg are the two to build the evening around, and the river joins them. Cankar Embankment adds more stalls beside the river, while Pogačar Square, Congress Square and Stritar Street carry the rest through the old town. On those two squares you will find fewer places to buy a drink, so they work better for a stroll than for a stop. The castle on the hill is the seventh point, lit in blue above the stalls. Searching for a holiday market here leads to the same route.

  • Prešeren Square is where the season starts, with the lights and the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation across the river.
  • Breg and Cankar Embankment line the Ljubljanica with stalls, and they are the best place to be after dark.
  • Pogačar Square has more stalls on the way through the old town.
  • Congress Square and Stritar Street hold stalls of their own.
  • Ljubljana Castle sits above the city and has stalls too, plus a nativity scene in the castle chapel.

When it runs in 2026

The stalls are listed for 27 Nov 2026 – 3 Jan 2027. The programme around them, called Praznični december in Slovenian and Festive December in English, has a longer run: 27 Nov 2026 – 14 Jan 2027. The lights come on at the opening ceremony on Prešeren Square: 27 Nov 2026 at 17:00. Around the stalls the city adds free events, among them a procession of Saint Nicholas, school choir concerts, Santa Claus processions at the end of December and New Year's Eve on the main squares. In January 2024 and January 2025 the ice rink on Pogačar Square opened only in the middle of the month, after the main part of the market, and nothing is confirmed for 2026.

What to eat and drink

The stalls sell mulled wine, hot tea, liqueurs, sausages, žganci, seafood, jota and sweets, with design goods, hats, gloves, scarves and souvenirs between them. The Carniolan sausage, potica and štruklji turn up on food lists for this market, so they are the names to look for. One circuit can therefore turn into gift shopping. Prices for mulled wine and any cup deposit are not published in the sources, so do not budget for them in advance. Dress for the cold, because the whole route is outdoors.

A route for one evening

Begin on Prešeren Square, ideally for the lights, then cross the Triple Bridge to the river side where Breg and Cankar Embankment begin. Walk along the water, stop for a drink at the place with the shortest queue, and turn back before you reach the end. The funicular up to the castle costs €6 for a return ride, and the view over the stalls is the reason to go. Come back down and finish on Prešeren Square, where the evening began. Weekends are busier than weekdays, so come earlier in the week if crowds bother you.

Above the stalls and under the hills

The market sits by the river, and two tickets are worth buying around it, one up and one down. The castle is the short one, a funicular ride above the stalls, while the cave is a day out that has its own Christmas date in 2026.

  • Ljubljana Castle: one Castle Ticket covers the funicular return, the viewing tower and the museums, at €19 at the ticket office, while the Illustrations in Motion video mapping is sold on a separate ticket. Winter hours: castle 9:00–19:00, funicular 9:00–18:00, every day of the year. On the last and first days of the year: on 31 December the castle and funicular close at 17:00, and on 1 January they open at 10:00.
  • Postojna Cave: a guided tour through the cave, adult ticket €34.90, and the 36th Living Nativity staged inside it 25 to 30 December 2026. The cave park says it is open every day, even on holidays and in bad weather, and a combined Two Adventures ticket adds Predjama Castle.

Where to stay

The old town is small enough to cross on foot, so a bed close to the river saves the walk home in the cold. Book the room early, because the centre and the market are the same part of town, and read the page on where to stay for the districts.
