In brief

Magisch Maastricht turns the Vrijthof into a winter park with a covered ice rink, a 45 m Ferris wheel and Austrian-style chalets. This page covers what stands on the square, when it opens in 2026 and how to pair it with an evening in the old town.

The main Christmas market in Maastricht works best as a single evening rather than a route. The organisers call it Magisch Maastricht, the city's own site describes a winter event more than a row of wooden huts, and locals simply say kerstmarkt. The stalls share the square with a rink, a wheel, a curling lane and a Fun House, so plan for lingering.

Magisch Maastricht on the Vrijthof

  • Wooden chalets with gifts and decorations, set out across the Vrijthof around the main attractions.
  • Eetkraampjes, the food stalls, selling oliebollen and wafels, with glühwein and hot chocolate to wash them down.
  • A proper Austrian Almhütte, which gives the square a corner that feels more Alpine than Dutch.
  • Place d'Amour, one of the named corners of the grounds, listed on the official page next to the Almhütte.
  • A covered ice rink, a carousel, curling and a Fun House for anyone who came with children.
  • A 45 m Ferris wheel with glass gondolas, a reason to arrive while there is still some daylight.

When it runs

The 2026 edition will run 27 Nov – 27 Dec 2026. The organisers call the whole thing a winter event rather than an Advent market, and it carries on past Christmas Day, so it also suits a trip between the holidays. According to family guides, entry to the grounds is free. Prices for the rink and the wheel and daily opening hours have not been published for 2026, so decide on the day how much of the programme you want to pay for.

Market, basilica and old town in one day

Spend the daylight hours in the old town and keep the Vrijthof for the evening. The square sits beside the Basilica of St Servatius, and the lights on the terraces around the market come on in the evening. Start at the stalls with a bag of oliebollen, then take the wheel, since the glass gondolas look out over the roofs and the basilica. Rink and curling come next if you have children with you. Leave the square once you are cold, because the streets around it are full of places to eat, and the market is better as a start to the evening than as dinner. Walk back through the lit terraces for a last look.

Where to sleep

Sleep in or near the old town, so that the walk back after dark takes minutes and the wheel, the rink and dinner fit into one evening without a taxi. The market runs for a month, so there is no need to squeeze the evening into one date.
