Hamburg runs several Weihnachtsmärkte at once, from the historic Rathausmarkt to white tents on the Alster and an adults-only market on the Reeperbahn. This page sorts them by who they suit and gives an order for a single evening.
Pick the wrong Weihnachtsmarkt in Hamburg and you get either a family crowd when you wanted a late drink, or a late drink when you brought the children. The city has a market for each mood, and they sit in different parts of town, so the choice matters more here than in a place with one central square. Advent in Hamburg is easy once you know which is which.
Rathausmarkt
The historic Christmas market in front of the town hall is run by Roncalli, and it is the one to see if you only get one night. hamburg.de calls it the most popular in the city and one of the best known in Germany. In 2026 the dates are 23 Nov – 23 Dec 2026, and it is open daily 11 am – 9 pm. Roughly 80 huts fill the square, split into a toy lane, the Spielzeuggasse, and a lane of food, the Spezialitätengasse, with a historic carousel in between. A flying Santa crosses the sky on a sleigh with reindeer at 4, 6 and 8 pm every day, and a brass quartet plays daily except Saturday. On the four Advent Saturdays there is also a Christmas parade.
For those who care, the official description has a green side: the electricity comes from renewable sources, there is no plastic packaging, and the Glühwein is made from organic ingredients, with vegetarian and vegan food on offer.
WeißerZauber on the Jungfernstieg
Forget the wooden hut here. WeißerZauber, the white magic of the Jungfernstieg, replaces it with white pagoda tents hung with stars, and the effect on the Binnenalster after dark is closer to a row of lanterns over the water than to a village. In the 2025 edition it had about 80 vendors and a historic Ferris wheel dating from 1926, which is a reason to stop and look at the city from above. After the Rathausmarkt this is the market for a longer walk and a photograph.
A market for adults
On the Spielbudenplatz, right on the Reeperbahn, Santa Pauli is a different animal. The programme is aimed at adults rather than families, according to a 2025 review, so it is a deliberately different evening from the other two. If you have children, skip it and go back to the Rathausmarkt. This year it runs 9 Nov – 23 Dec 2026.
HafenCity, Wandsbek, Eimsbüttel
Outside the centre the markets get calmer. HafenCity has an ice rink and a winter minigolf course on the Überseeboulevard. The Wandsbeker Winterzauber has a rink of about 400 m², and the Apostelkirche in Eimsbüttel was the quiet option in 2025, with few people. On the Fleetinsel two lit traditional sailing ships floated in the canal, and part of the market is covered, which is useful in the rain. The market on the Spitalerstraße has a Saturday Advent parade on the Mönckebergstraße, which in 2025 ran from 2 to 5 pm. And in St. Georg there is the Winter Pride on the Lange Reihe, meant for queer visitors and friends.
- Rathausmarkt: for a first visit and for families, with the carousel, the toy lane and the flying Santa
- WeißerZauber: for a walk by the Alster and the Ferris wheel
- Santa Pauli: for adults only, who want a different kind of evening
- HafenCity, Wandsbek and Eimsbüttel: for skating or for quiet, away from the centre
Start at the Rathausmarkt around 5 pm, so that you are there when the flying Santa goes up at 6. Move on to the Jungfernstieg for the white tents, and finish at Santa Pauli only if you are an adult and want a different kind of night. If you can reach only one market, make it the Rathausmarkt.
