In brief

The Trieste Christmas markets are a handful of streets and two squares near the Borsa and Ponterosso, with an ice rink and the San Nicolò fair nearby. This page covers the 2025 edition and what is known while 2026 is awaited.

Trieste is not a big Christmas market town, and the mercatini di Natale do not pretend otherwise. They are a few streets and two squares in the middle of a working port city, which is exactly why you can see them all in one evening and still have time for a drink. The dates for 2026 have not been announced.

The mercatini in the centre

In the 2025 edition the stalls stood on Via delle Torri, Via Ponchielli and Via Bellini, and on two squares, Piazza del Ponterosso and Piazza della Borsa. A route that follows that order takes you from the narrow streets to the open squares. The food of the 2024 edition gives an idea of what to expect, with gubana, ćevapčići, chestnuts and vin brulè. Anyone after a mountain-style market with long rows of chalets will not find it here, while anyone who likes a short walk with chestnuts and vin brulè will.

When, and what about 2026

Last known schedule — 2025 edition: 7 Dec 2025 – 6 Jan 2026. For 2026 no dates have been published. The city's concession for the Christmas markets covers the three years from 2024 to 2026, but that is only a framework and not a calendar, so the sensible approach is to wait for the announcement before booking anything. Because the 2025/26 edition ran into the new year, it could also be called a New Year market.

San Nicolò and the ice rink

The ice rink stood on Piazza Ponterosso — 2025 edition: open until 11 Jan 2026. The Fiera di San Nicolò was a separate fair on Viale XX Settembre near Largo Bonifacio, open from 9 am to 9 pm, and separate from the mercatini. The rink is a reason to see Ponterosso in the evening too, when the market and the ice are seen together.

Where to sleep

The market runs through the middle of the city, so a room near the Borsa and Ponterosso shortens every evening walk. You can return without a taxi, which you notice on a winter night. With the dates for 2026 still open, a room with free cancellation is a better choice than the first one offered.
