late spring, early autumn. The date mostly changes the crowds on the square and the waterfront, and the hours of the Victory Lighthouse, which is open only in season.
If you only pick one month — September. Temperature is the mean over the whole day (not the daily high), and a rainy day has at least 1 mm of rain; averages for 2021–2024.
Late spring and early autumn, without the bura
late spring, early autumn. In summer the crowds gather on Piazza Unità d'Italia and Molo Audace, and in winter the bura makes a walk by the sea harder, so late spring and early autumn stay the calmest choice.

A crowd with a reason
In early October the city fills up for the Barcolana regatta, one of the largest sailing regattas in the world — the waterfront is at its busiest of the year, and accommodation is worth booking ahead.

Seasonal
The Victory Lighthouse is open 3 Apr–4 Nov, seasonal and weekends, last entry 30 min before closing, closed outside that stretch.

What runs all year
The square, Molo Audace, the Canal Grande and Castello di San Giusto are visited in any month; the castle is open daily; closed 25 Dec and 1 Jan, shortened hours until 14.00 on 24 and 31 Dec. The Revoltella Museum is closed only on Tuesdays, regardless of season.
