Three trips from Trieste fit into half a day — Miramare Castle on the shore, the fishing town of Muggia just past the city line, and the Grotta Gigante cave inland — while Ljubljana, across the Slovenian border, takes a full day.
A white castle on a rock
city bus (lines 6/36, seasonal) to Grignano, about 20 min. The park around the castle is free, the €15 ticket covers only the interior.

A Venetian core just past the city line
line 20 bus (Trieste Trasporti) runs to Muggia, about 39 min, for €3. The small port town keeps a Venetian castle and narrow lanes, enough for half a day.

A hall underground
line 42 bus from Piazza Oberdan, towards Opicina, about 30 min. The ticket and the fare together run €18. The Grotta Gigante is one of the largest show caves in the world by the size of its main chamber.

A full day across the border
FlixBus, direct line: about 1 h 20, the ticket from €26 (return). A full day in the Slovenian capital still leaves time to return the same evening.
