Where to go: five more questions →

The whole centre of Trieste fits into one packed day on foot: from the square by the sea, past the canal and the synagogue, up the hill to the castle, then back down through the museum to the café where James Joyce once sat. A second day belongs to a trip from `izleti`, since this loop already covers the centre.

Day 1

The square, the canal, the castle and the museum

09:00

Start on Piazza Unità d'Italia. Arriving by air, allow 45–50 min from the airport (line 51 bus (APT/TPL FVG), direct to the centre).

09:30

To the end of Molo Audace and back. Free entry.

10:00

Along the Canal Grande to the church of Sant'Antonio Nuovo at its end.

10:30

The Synagogue of Trieste: guided tour only, €7, so the tour schedule sets this hour.

11:15

Up San Giusto hill to the castle, €7, open daily; closed 25 Dec and 1 Jan, shortened hours until 14.00 on 24 and 31 Dec; the ramparts give the view over the gulf.

13:00

Lunch, a set menu €15.

14:15

The Revoltella Museum, a collection of 19th- and 20th-century Italian art, €7.

15:45

Last stop Caffè San Marco, where Italo Svevo and James Joyce once sat, from €1 (coffee at the counter).

Frequently asked

Before you go

Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.

Can Trieste be done in a single day?

Yes, if you keep to the order from morning to afternoon: all on foot, with one climb to the castle and lunch in the middle.

What if the visit falls on a Tuesday?

The Revoltella Museum is closed that day, so the 14:15 slot can go to the Risiera di San Sabba, which is open on Tuesdays, 1 Mar–11 Oct: daily 9–19; from 12 Oct: daily 9–17, though it sits on the other side of the city.
