In brief

Which areas make up the Advent market in Leipzig, when they open, how the mug deposit works and how to walk them in one evening.

The Leipzig Christmas market is a district more than a square, and the city lists it as a single event spread across the old centre in several separate areas. Visitors who expect one crowded plaza find a loop of squares, lanes and courtyards that rewards a plan. This guide sorts the areas by what each does best, gives the opening times and ends with an order for one evening.

Which markets there are and how they differ

The city calls the whole event the Leipziger Weihnachtsmarkt and counts about 300 stalls. It says the market was first mentioned in 1458 and presents it as the second oldest in Germany, a ranking that Dresden and Bautzen dispute, so read it as the city's own claim. Five areas are worth knowing by their German names, each with its nearest stop.

  • Weihnachtsmarkt on the Markt, in front of the Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall), is the main area. It has a fir about 20 m tall hung with 300 red and gold baubles and around 3,000 lights, a stage with a daily programme and trombonists on the town hall balcony. Nearest stop: S-Bahn Markt, underground through the City-Tunnel.
  • Augustusplatz holds the Märchenwald, life-size scenes from Grimm fairy tales with a prize quiz called Märchenrätsel, plus a Ferris wheel, the Finnisches Dorf (glögi and Flammlachs) and the Südtiroler Dorf (Schüttelbrot, Alpenkäse, Kaminwurzen). The city points families here, with seating and toilets, and the square is closed to cars. Nearest stop: tram Augustusplatz, and the Hauptbahnhof is about five minutes on foot.
  • Historischer Weihnachtsmarkt, also called the Mittelaltermarkt "Alt Leipzig", fills the Naschmarkt behind the Old Town Hall with craftspeople from candlemakers to blacksmiths. Nearest stop: Markt.
  • Nikolaikirchhof, beside the Nikolaikirche, has an eight-metre Erzgebirge Christmas pyramid with Feuerzangenbowle and waffles beneath it. The tourist board recommends this Feuerzangenbowle as the best in town. Nearest stop: Markt.
  • Schweizer Dorf on Burgplatz joined the market in 2024. It has an Eisstockbahn (an ice curling lane, booking advised), old cable-car cabins as seats and dishes from Switzerland.

When they open in 2026

Advent in Leipzig runs 24 Nov – 23 Dec 2026, and one timetable covers the whole market. Hours: Sun–Thu 11:00–21:00, Fri–Sat 11:00–22:00; 22 and 23 Dec until 20:00 (23 Dec only the stalls on the Markt). The tree is lit at an opening ceremony with the Thomanerchor, a youth orchestra and the mayor. Opening: 24 Nov 2026 at 17:00 (stalls from 14:00). Father Christmas arrives at the Hauptbahnhof by train and rides to the Markt by carriage, which makes a good day for children. Arrival: 28 Nov 2026 (around 11:00, Hauptbahnhof, platform 6).

What to eat and drink, and the mug deposit

The mug matters more than the mulled wine, because it decides how smoothly the evening goes. Most stalls run the city's Tassenkreislauf, a return system for the glass Weihnachtsmarkttasse, and last season the deposit was €4. The children's mug, for soft drinks only, was €5 last season, and the three latest series are taken back. The Südtiroler Dorf, the Finnisches Dorf, the medieval market and the pyramid work with their own mugs. A mug is sold only with a drink, and taking it home as a souvenir is fine, the city says so itself. The food list is long, since the tourist board counts over 100 treats: oven-fresh pretzels, Pulsnitzer Lebkuchen, Flammkuchen, Langos, Kräppelchen, Poffertjes, Glühbier and Leipziger Stollen. At a holiday market with about 300 stalls the real task is choosing. The queue at the Kräppelchen stall can be seen from far away, which is useful information.

One evening, in order

Start at the Hauptbahnhof and walk to Augustusplatz while there is still light, because the Märchenwald and the Ferris wheel suit the afternoon better than the dark. Grimmaische Straße leads on toward the Markt, past a forest of illuminated animals and mushrooms, nine large figures in all. The Naschmarkt comes next for the craftspeople, and then the Markt itself, ideally after dark and before the trombonists play. Times: Mon–Thu 18:00, Fri 19:00, Sat and Sun 13:00 and 19:00. After the music go to Salzgässchen for the carousel, drink a Feuerzangenbowle under the pyramid at the Nikolaikirchhof and finish on the Thomaswiese, where the light installations are made for photos in the afternoon and evening. This order is a suggestion drawn from the layout of the squares, and walking it the other way works just as well.

Crowds and getting there

Saturdays were the busiest days last year, followed by Fridays, according to the city's market office, and Sundays were rated very good. On a weekday before 18:00 the lanes are calmer, though that is an impression only. Parking near the centre gets tight on weekends, so take the S-Bahn to Markt or a tram to Augustusplatz. Shops in the centre are open on two Sundays, 29 Nov and 13 Dec 2026, and that brings shoppers into the same lanes. For a quieter evening, Werk 2 is the better address.

What else the city offers in Advent

Advent in Leipzig reaches past the central loop. The Weihnachtsmarkt at Connewitzer Kreuz in Werk 2 runs 11 – 20 Dec 2026, with free entry, handmade goods and street food, and trams 9, 10 and 11 stop at Connewitzer Kreuz. A winter market, Der kauzige Wintermarkt at Jahnallee 52, is planned for 30 Oct 2026 – 31 Jan 2027. In this parade year the Große Erzgebirgische Bergparade brings about 800 miners' musicians and costumed marchers from seven bands to the Markt: 19 Dec 2026 (start 16:00, final concert around 17:00). The Thomanerchor also gives concerts in the Thomaskirche during Advent.

A roof over the evening

The Markt is lit and loud at dusk, so the daylight hours are the ones to fill with something taller or warmer. Take the monument if you want scale, the tropical hall if the forecast is bad, and the museum if you would rather end the afternoon with music. Winter hours are shorter than summer ones, so start before lunch.

  • Monument to the Battle of the Nations stands 91 m tall and is open 10:00–16:00 from November to March, and closed on 24 and 31 December. Adult ticket: €12
  • Leipzig Zoo, Gondwanaland puts three continents of tropics under one roof, and the zoo says it is open 365 days a year. Tickets are sold for the zoo as a whole
  • Panometer Leipzig is a panorama building that currently shows Antarctica
  • Bach Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–18:00. The Thomanerchor boys choir sings its motet Fridays at 18:00 and Saturdays at 15:00, and the programme costs €3

Leipzig works best as a loop of small stops, and the Markt is the sensible first one. A second evening on Augustusplatz or at Werk 2 changes the pace without changing the city. Warm gloves help more than any plan.
