Szeged Advent turns Dóm tér into a small Christmas market with a 50 m Ferris wheel, a straw maze for children and mulled wine.
Szeged does Advent as a series of events spread over the centre, and the Christmas market is the part where you stop and eat. Dóm tér is the base, the programme reaches the neighbouring squares, and the whole thing is compact enough for one evening.
Szeged Advent on Dóm tér
The official name is Szeged Advent, and Dóm tér is its heart, described by the city tourist board as the central place of the festive preparations. The programme also stretches to Klauzál tér and Dugonics tér, so a walk through the centre picks up more than the market. Dates: 27 Nov – 24 Dec 2026. The simplest plan is to start on Dóm tér, then follow the lights to the other two squares.
Each Advent week brings the lighting of a candle on the city's Advent wreath, with local personalities and church representatives taking part. A large reindeer and Santa's sleigh also move around the centre. The 2026 programme has not been published yet and is announced on the event's Facebook page, so check there before you set off.
The wheel, the maze and the lights
The enclosed Ferris wheel rises 50 m, and from the top you look down on the lit centre.Children get a straw maze and a story corner, and the programme adds gift and decoration workshops and screenings of classic slide films. The wheel is the thing to pick if you have only one ride to make, and the maze is the thing to pick if you have children.
What to eat and drink
The Christmas market serves mulled wine, hot dishes and sweets, and the evening more or less orders itself: something hot first, then something sweet, and a last lap of the square with a cup in hand.
- Mulled wine at the Christmas market, the obvious first stop on Dóm tér.
- Hot dishes from the stalls when the evening cools down.
- Sweets for the walk between the squares.
- Prices and opening hours are not published, so none are quoted here.

Hungary, in brief
What now
If this sounds like your trip, start here.

Szeged
→A city on the Tisza that rose almost from scratch after the great flood of 1879, with broad boulevards, Art Nouveau palaces and a church the city itself vowed to build.

Szeged in 2 days
→Spend day one on the centre, which can be walked in a single loop, and day two on the zoo and the Anna…

Day trips from Szeged
→Ópusztaszer needs a whole day and a bus ride, whereas Hódmezővásárhely and Makó fit into half a day each by train.

Where to stay in Szeged
→Szeged is small enough that the choice comes down to one question: do you want the square outside your door or the river?

What Szeged costs
→In Szeged most of the money goes on the room and on the long journey from Budapest, because tickets in the centre are cheap and the zoo is the priciest entry.

The best time to visit Szeged
→Szeged is a city for the open air, so the warmer months belong to the terraces along the Tisza and Dóm tér, while in winter the museums, the church and the thermal bath take over.

Getting around Szeged
→Szeged is reached via Budapest rather than directly from the airport, by bus 100E, metro M3 and a train from Nyugati station.
