In brief

York's main Christmas market is St Nicholas Fair, set along Parliament Street, and this page explains where it sits, when it runs and how to fit the Shambles and the Minster into the same evening.

The Shambles is not the Christmas market, however often its lit-up lane is photographed as one.St Nicholas Fair fills Parliament Street and St Sampson's Square, while the Shambles, close by, is the lane that looks best once its lights come on. Treat them as three stops of one evening and York works very well in Advent.

St Nicholas Fair, the main market

The fair runs from Parliament Street to St Sampson's Square, with more stalls spilling along Coppergate, into the Shambles Market and down the side lanes. Last year's edition had over 100 stalls in alpine-style wooden chalets, with music and carols on Parliament Street and Coppergate. The setting is a small medieval centre, so the market feels like part of the town rather than something parked on top of it. Go at dusk, when the chalets are lit and the crowd is still thin, and leave the Shambles for after you have eaten.

When it runs

St Nicholas Fair will run on these dates: 12 Nov – 21 Dec 2026. Opening hours: daily 10:30am–7pm, closed Tuesdays. Weekends from late November are very busy, so a weekday is the calmer choice if your plans allow it.

What to eat and drink

The stalls sell mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, local cheeses and sweets, which is enough for a walking supper. For somewhere to sit, the food court in Shambles Market serves quick food and has seating, and it opens daily from mid-November. Wander the chalets first and decide at the end where to eat.

One evening, in this order

Reach Parliament Street just before dusk, so you see the chalets switch from daylight to glow. Browse toward St Sampson's Square, then cut across to Coppergate for the music before you head to the Shambles, where the old overhanging houses are best seen once the lights are on. Finish at the Minster. On a Saturday the whole route is slow going, which is why a weekday evening is better.

The Minster in Advent

The Minster can be visited at dusk in December, and that visit is free. Carol concerts take place on several evenings through the month, and tickets sell out, so book early if you want one. There is also a Midnight Mass. St Lucia is marked in the Minster on 14 Dec 2026.

Where to sleep

Stay inside or near the walls, so the walk home after the Minster is short. Book early for the weekends, since those are the evenings everybody wants.
