A day in York is built around one hour: the Minster opens for sightseeing at 9.30, so the walls and the Shambles fit in before it, while the city is still empty. The afternoon goes to the railway museum behind the station, open every day until 17.00 — and on Sunday, when the Minster takes visitors only from 12.45 to 14.30, the order turns round.
From Bootham Bar to the station
Up the steps at Bootham Bar, then along the walls eastwards to Monk Bar. Just this stretch, not the full circuit: that way you come down at 8.45 on the far side of the centre, five minutes from the Shambles.
Down Goodramgate to the Shambles, while the shops are still shut and the street is empty.
York Minster, at opening, while only the first visitors are inside. Three hours is enough for the cathedral and, on the dearer ticket, the climb up the central tower.
Lunch, then over Lendal Bridge to the station. The National Railway Museum is right behind it, on Leeman Road.
The railway museum: entry is free, and at busy times you book a slot online. Allow two hours; it closes at 17.00.
Back over the bridge, through the Museum Gardens and the ruins of St Mary's Abbey. In summer this is also when you take the other half of the walls, at Micklegate Bar, because the gates only close at dusk.
Dinner off the Shambles–Minster axis, when the city empties again after the day visitors.

On a Sunday
On Sundays the Minster is open for sightseeing only from 12.45 to 14.30, so the day turns round: the walls and the Shambles still before nine, the railway museum from its 10.00 opening, and the Minster in that single afternoon window. If you are in town Saturday and Sunday, take the Minster on Saturday, and on Sunday the same ticket lets you back in.

What spoils a day in York
The full circuit of the walls in the morning. It takes about two hours with the descents, so you reach the Shambles after ten and the Minster only around midday — at the peak of the crowd in both. That is why the morning is just the stretch to Monk Bar, and the rest of the circuit, if at all, comes in summer after the museum.
Before you go
Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.
Do children pay at York Minster?
No: up to four children aged 17 and under go free with each paying adult.
Do I need to book the National Railway Museum?
Not necessarily. Entry is free and walk-up visitors are admitted every day; an online slot only cuts the wait when it is busy.
