In brief

Sixteen Christmas markets sit within walking distance in the old town of Graz, and one of them is the pick for a single evening. The 2026 dates are already published, so the route below uses them.

The real question in Graz is which Advent market, because the old town has sixteen of them. Graz Tourismus counts that many in the historic centre, all within walking distance, and most open on the same day in the second half of November. Each is a Christkindlmarkt with its own square and its own hours, so for one evening the choice comes down to the Altgrazer Christkindlmarkt in the Franziskanerviertel.

Hauptplatz

The market in front of the town hall

The Hauptplatz Christmas market stands in front of the Rathaus, the town hall, and it is the one on the postcards. It runs 20 Nov – 24 Dec 2026, and the fir tree with more than 25,000 LED bulbs is lit 28 Nov – 24 Dec 2026. An avenue of light leads from the Rathaus to the tree, projections play across the roofs of the huts, and a carousel turns with its own lamps and music. Arrive before dusk, watch the square switch on, then walk on to eat somewhere quieter. Hours: daily 11:00–20:00, food stands to 22:00; 24 Dec 11:00–14:00.

Franziskanerviertel

The Altgrazer Christkindlmarkt

The Altgrazer Christkindlmarkt fills the Franziskanerviertel around Franziskanerplatz, and it is the oldest market in Graz. The huts sell crafts and decorations from Thuringia next to products from the Styrian GenussRegionen, and a carousel turns on the square. It keeps going later than the Hauptplatz stalls, which makes it the better place for a slow second round. The market is open 20 Nov – 24 Dec 2026. Hours: daily 11:00–22:00; 24 Dec 10:00–14:00.

The smaller markets

Eisernes Tor, Karmeliterplatz, Glockenspielplatz, Mehlplatz

  • Eisernes Tor: the Adventmarkt am Eisernen Tor has about 20 stalls with crafts and regional delicacies, built around a light concept. It stays open 20 Nov – 23 Dec 2026. Hours: Mon–Thu 14:00–20:00, Fri–Sun 11:00–20:00, food stands to 22:00.
  • Karmeliterplatz: Weihnachten am Karmeliterplatz is an urban Advent with a view of the Uhrturm, light projections, Styrian products and live music. It stays open 20 Nov – 23 Dec 2026. Hours: Thu–Fri 13:00–22:00, Sat–Sun 11:00–22:00; 8, 22 and 23 Dec 13:00–22:00; closed Mon–Wed.
  • Glockenspielplatz: crafts, a joint session of tying Advent wreaths, and visits from Saint Nicholas and the Krampus, starting late in the morning. It opens 21 Nov – 24 Dec 2026.
  • Mehlplatz: the Adventmarkt am Mehlplatz, the quiet fourth stop. It is open 20 Nov – 24 Dec 2026. Hours: daily 11:00–19:00, food stands to 22:00.
Schlossberg

Aufsteirern and the ice nativity scene

Aufsteirern is the Christmas market on the Schlossberg, the hill above the old town, and the Kasematten, the Glockenturm Liesl and the Art-Sat give it its setting. The huts sell Styrian food and crafts, and the way up is the Schlossbergbahn funicular. It opens only from Friday to Sunday. Season: 20 Nov – 20 Dec 2026 (five weekends). Hours: Fridays from 12:00, Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00.

The ice nativity scene stands in the courtyard of the Landhaus at Herrengasse 16, built from about 35 tonnes of ice and free to enter, in a courtyard that is open every day from 8 to 21. It stands from 28 Nov 2026. The Murinsel is lit up as well, and it goes well with a walk back down the hill. The lights burn 21 Nov – 20 Dec 2026.

What to eat and drink

Glühwein, Punsch and Feuerzangenbowle are the hot drinks on the stand menus, and Schilcher, the rosé wine of Styria, is poured at Aufsteirern. Pumpkin seed oil in a gift pack is the souvenir that fits in a coat pocket. Prices and the mug deposit are printed on a board at each stand. Backhendl and Wurzelfleisch belong on restaurant menus instead of at the stalls, so treat the holiday market food as drinks and snacks. Take the first mug on the Hauptplatz under the lights, and the Schilcher up on the Schlossberg.

  • Feuerzangenbowle, the third of the hot drinks, for anyone who has already done Glühwein and Punsch.
  • Schilcher, the rosé from Styria, at Aufsteirern.
  • Regional delicacies from Styrian producers, sold at the stands in the Franziskanerviertel and at the Eisernes Tor.

In which order, and when it is quieter

Start on the Hauptplatz before dark, move to the Franziskanerviertel when the huts there are the ones still serving, and leave the smaller markets for the next day. The ice nativity scene and the Murinsel suit the end of the evening. The order is a suggestion from the map, a Weihnachtsmarkt stroll through a compact centre, and the programme details are subject to change, so the Holding Graz Advent page has the current version.

On weekdays before two in the afternoon only the Hauptplatz, the Franziskanerviertel, the Mehlplatz and the Glockenspielplatz are open. Karmeliterplatz works from Thursday to Sunday, the Eisernes Tor opens on weekdays in the afternoon, and Aufsteirern keeps to Friday to Sunday. On Christmas Eve the Hauptplatz, the Franziskanerviertel, the Glockenspielplatz and the Mehlplatz still open, while the Eisernes Tor, the Karmeliterplatz and Aufsteirern do not. The Advent train for sightseeing runs 20 Nov – 23 Dec 2026, daily 11:00–19:00 (24 Dec 11:00–14:00), and the Advent tram goes on weekend evenings, with its 2026 route still to be published. Ticket for the train: €4 (children €2).

The Krampuslauf comes first, before any market opens, and the programme details are still to be published. Date and place: Sun 8 Nov 2026, 14:00.

The Grazer Winterwelt is the ice rink at Jahngasse 3 below the Schlossberg, with 3,000 m² of ice and skate hire. It opens earlier than the markets and runs well into the new year, with the season set at 13 Nov 2026 – 31 Jan 2027. Hours: daily 9:00–19:00, in skating slots.

Hill, art and armour: tickets for the cold days

The Schlossbergbahn takes the climb out of a market evening on the hill. On a rainy day the Kunsthaus and the armoury keep you indoors, and each has fixed winter hours.

  • Schlossberg, above the old town: the Schlossbergbahn funicular and the Schlossberg lift take you up to the hill where Aufsteirern stands. It runs from 1 October to 31 March Sunday to Thursday 10:00 to midnight, Friday and Saturday 10:00 to 2:00. Adult fares: hour ticket €3.30, combined funicular and lift ticket €4.90.
  • Kunsthaus Graz, Lendkai 1: the museum of contemporary art, an indoor hour away from the markets. Open Tuesday to Sunday and public holidays 10:00–18:00, closed on 24 and 25 December 2026. Standard admission: €13.
  • Landeszeughaus, the Styrian armoury: in winter you see it on a guided tour. Winter hours: 1 Nov 2026 to 6 Jan 2027, Tuesday to Sunday, guided tours at 11:00 and 14:00 in German and at 12:30 in English, closed on 24 and 25 December and on 1 January.
