Where to go: five more questions →

Graz splits into two halves around the Mur. The old town sits on the east bank, with the Hauptplatz and the Schlossberg, and Lend on the west, with the Kunsthaus and the main station. A dorm bed runs €12–20, a 3-star hotel room for two runs €29–43; Lend is the cheaper of the two.

The old town — closest to the sights

The east bank, around the Hauptplatz, the Landhaus and the foot of the Schlossberg, has the densest accommodation in the city and sits closest to everything in the two-day plan. A dorm bed runs €12–20, a 3-star hotel room for two runs €29–43; pricier than across the river.

Lend — across the river, cheaper and closer to the station

The west bank of the Mur, home to both the Kunsthaus and the Murinsel, three hundred metres from the Hauptplatz across the bridge. The main station sits here too, which makes Lend a practical choice for arriving and leaving; S1 train to the Hauptbahnhof stops right there. The district runs cheaper and, by most accounts, more multicultural than the old town; one of the city's hostels, a&o Graz Hauptbahnhof, whose name already gives away where it is, holds a price of €12–20.

What to check before you book a bed

  • Close to the Hauptplatz is not the same as close to parking. Old town streets are narrow and partly pedestrian; the city is walked anyway, so a car is rarely needed.
  • A hostel bed runs €12–20 per person. The range depends on the hostel and the season; summer and off-season are not the same price.
  • Lend means ten more minutes on foot to the Schlossberg. Handy for the Kunsthaus and the station, a little further for the first morning's climb.
