The best time to visit Gdańsk
In Gdańsk the date changes the sea temperature as much as the air — and three weeks in late summer turn the city into one long fair.
- Best
- June and September
- Warmest
- August, averaging 19.5°C
- Coldest
- January, averaging 1.7°C

Gdańsk has a continental-Baltic climate: a cold winter, a warm but short summer, and a sea that warms up more slowly than the air. August is the warmest month, averaging 19.5°C, and January the coldest, 1.7°C. June and September land in between — warm enough for the city and the beach, without the three weeks of fair crowds that July and August bring.
Gdańsk month by month
Temperature is the mean over the whole day (not the daily high), and a rainy day has at least 1 mm of rain; averages for 2021–2024.

The middle, without the fair
June and September carry enough warmth for walking through the Main Town and for the beach at Brzeźno or Jelitkowo, while the city sits outside the main rush of visitors that arrives in late July. June has longer days, September a warmer sea after a summer of heating up.
St Dominic's Fair fills the city for three weeks
From 25 July to 16 August, St Dominic's Fair runs — a market and festival held since the Middle Ages. The Main Town's streets fill with stalls and people from morning to night, and a room is worth booking earlier than usual for that stretch.

The sea warms up later than the air
In June the sea is about 15 degrees while the air is already at 18 — come for a swim in June and you find a warmer city than sea. By July and August the sea reaches 19 to 20, and in September, once the air has already cooled, it still holds around 17.

What has no season
The Main Town, the museums and the restaurants run all year, with the same closing days every month. Only what depends on the weather outside has a season: the water tram to Westerplatte runs only from April to the end of November, and the beaches go without lifeguards outside June–August.
