Beaches in Barcelona
Eight beaches along one stretch, and every one different
- Longest
- Sant Sebastià and Barceloneta
- Quieter
- Bogatell and Nova Icària
- Lifeguards
- From late May to mid-September

Barceloneta is the beach everyone reaches first, being about 20 minutes on foot from the centre, and it is rarely the one that suits you best. Eight beaches line up along the coast from Sant Sebastià to Llevant, and all of them sit on metro line L4 or tram T4, so the choice rests on crowd, sport and rules. This page sorts them from the busy end to the windy one.
Sant Sebastià and Barceloneta: the first two kilometres
Sant Sebastià and Barceloneta are the two longest beaches in town, at 1,100 m each, and they are the ones with the bars and restaurants. Sant Sebastià is large and mixed, tourists beside locals, with bars along the sand. Barceloneta is the oldest of the eight and keeps its restaurants on the seawall above the beach, so lunch and swim sit within a few steps of each other.
Both are reached from the L4 stop Barceloneta, and Ciutadella serves the second one too. If the aim is the shortest road from the hotel to the water, this is the stretch to pick. The price of that convenience is the company on the sand. Go early.
Barceloneta is about 20 minutes on foot from the centre.
Check the same room on both sites: price and cancellation terms can differ.
Somorrostro, Nova Icària and Bogatell: fewer crowds
Somorrostro, at 522 m, shares its stop with Barceloneta and is easy to reach, which makes it the nearest step away from the crowd. It offers sport and children's play areas, which gives it a different tone from the bar-lined sand next door.
Nova Icària, 400 m long, is one of the quieter beaches and a family choice, reached by L4 at Ciutadella or Bogatell, or by the T4 tram. Bogatell, 640 m, is quieter than the first two and belongs to joggers and cyclists. For one calm afternoon with a book, take Bogatell, and for a morning with children, take Nova Icària.
Mar Bella, Nova Mar Bella and Llevant: sport and wind
Mar Bella, 500 m, is the beach for windsurfing and kayaks, and it is windy, which suits the sport. It is also known as a beach for young nudists, though that is a reputation and no official designation. Get off at Selva de Mar, on L4 or T4. Bring a windbreaker. The reward is a beach built for doing things rather than lying still.
Nova Mar Bella, another 500 m, is well equipped and shares the stops Selva de Mar and El Maresme with Llevant. Llevant, the shortest at 375 m, opened in 2006, has easy access and is the only beach where dogs are allowed, and only in one part of it. Pick Mar Bella if the wind and a board are the point, and Llevant if the dog is coming.

Rules and lifeguards
Since the summer of 2022 every beach in the city has been closed to smokers. Bars on the beach may allow it, but the sand may not, and dogs are limited to a part of Llevant. The lifeguard service works from the end of May to mid-September, and in 2025 it ran with 54 lifeguards on 21 towers. Assisted bathing is available at Nova Icària, Fòrum, Bogatell and Barceloneta.
- Smoking: banned on the sand, allowed in the beach bars.
- Dogs: only in a marked part of Llevant.
- Lifeguards: from the end of May to mid-September.
- Bare torso: fined in the city streets away from the beach at €120–300, with running by the sea exempt.
When the sea is warm enough
Swimming runs from June to October, and August is the warmest month, at about 24 to 26 °C. A beach day between June and mid-September has the lifeguards on duty. In 2026 the beach bars run from 28 March to 4 October, which stretches the season for a drink on the sand, though the sea itself is another matter.

Before you go
Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.
Can you smoke on a Barcelona beach?
Not on the sand. The ban applies to all the beaches and dates from the summer of 2022. Smoking in a beach bar is a separate case, and there the rule is looser.
Which beach is closest to the centre?
Barceloneta, about 20 minutes on foot from the centre. By metro it is the L4 stop Barceloneta, and Sant Sebastià sits at the same stop.
Is there a nudist beach?
Mar Bella is known as a beach for young nudists, but that is a reputation, not an official designation.
