Where to go: five more questions →

Berlin has no wrong month, only a wrong reason for a month. Walking and lakes want May to September, museums and clubs do not care about the weather, and in December the daylight lasts about eight hours, which decides how you order a day. Pick the month by what you came for.

May and June

In May and June the days stretch and the city moves outdoors. The Carnival of Cultures takes over for four days in mid-May, with the parade on the Sunday along Frankfurter Allee, and the street festival around Blücherplatz in Kreuzberg runs all four days with free entry.

Fête de la Musique falls on 21 June, with free music across the city from the afternoon until 22:00. The lake season opens in May too, and Strandbad Wannsee sells a day ticket: €6.50. If sights are the reason you came, these two months and September are the safest bet, because the days are long and heat is not a problem.

Summer

Lakes and Pride

Summer in Berlin is milder than its reputation. July and August average about 20 °C, which is warm enough for the lake and not hot enough to ruin a day of walking.

Wannsee is the classic beach, and the Badeschiff in Treptow floats a pool in the Spree: €8. Daylight stretches to nearly 17 hours around midsummer, so evenings last. Pride arrives in late July on a Saturday, and in 2026 it ran for two days for the first time, a Friday rally at the Brandenburg Gate and a parade on the Saturday.

Autumn

September, the marathon and the lights

September is the driest month in the 2021–2024 series, with 16.2 °C on average, and it is also the month of IFA, which fills the hotels. The Berlin Marathon runs on a Sunday in late September, a flat and fast course through the Brandenburg Gate and past the Victory Column.

In October the Festival of Lights switches on illuminations across the city for ten evenings, and the month averages 11.6 °C, so take a jacket for the night. From here the city turns indoors again.

Winter

Short days, markets and the Berlinale

Winter days are short: about eight hours of light in early December, with sunrise at 7:54 and sunset at 15:56. January averages 2.4 °C and February is the wettest month of the series. Winter is no dead season, though, so put outdoor sights such as the Wall or Teufelsberg around midday and give the evenings to clubs and dinners.

The Christmas markets open from the end of November, most of them until Christmas and a few until New Year, among them Gendarmenmarkt and the one in front of Schloss Charlottenburg. For dates, choose the weeks before Christmas.

The Berlinale fills twelve days in mid-February, and its last two days are now public days, open to audiences without accreditation. Museums carry the rest. Museum Pass Berlin, three days: €32. The northern wing of the Pergamon Museum reopens on 4 June 2027.
