The best time to visit Kitzbühel

Kitzbühel has one season for the mountain and one January week that gives the town its name worldwide — between the two, the town carries on and the lifts stand still.

Where to go: five more questions →

The month for Kitzbühel comes down to two questions, whether the lifts are running and whether the race is the reason for the trip. The mountain season runs Jun–Sep; January for the race; outside it the Hahnenkamm and the Kitzbüheler Horn stand still, and only the town is left. January is its own case, one week the priciest and busiest of the year, for the run that gives the place its name.

Average of the daily mean, by month — not the daily maximum or a min/max range

The Hahnenkamm and the Kitzbüheler Horn run the same schedule; both are closed off-season (before 23 May and after 11 Oct 2026), and on Fridays in peak season they keep extended hours, 8:30–17:00, Fridays to 23:00 (26 Jun–18 Sep 2026). Outside that window only the town is left: Vorderstadt, the museum and the restaurants run all year.

January

The week that gives the town its name

Outside one week, winter in Kitzbühel is an ordinary alpine winter, with no particular reason to time a trip around it. That week is different; the Hahnenkamm race on the Streif fills the town past capacity, with more visitors than residents, and it is the priciest and busiest week of the year, so rooms book out months ahead.

Off-season

Quieter and emptier

Outside the lift season the town is noticeably quieter, Vorderstadt without the crowds, but the mountain half of any plan falls away, since neither the Hahnenkamm nor the Kitzbüheler Horn is running.

Which month for whom

  • A first visit, June or September, while the lifts run and either side of the summer peak.
  • For the lake, July or August, while the Schwarzsee is warmest for swimming.
  • For the race, January, with a room booked months in advance.
  • For quiet, early June or late September, while the mountain is still open and the crowds have already thinned.

June or September, when the lifts are running and the summer peak has not hit yet.

Why is January so expensive in Kitzbühel?

Because of the Hahnenkamm race on the Streif, raced every January; the town gets more visitors than residents that week, and rooms book out months ahead.
