Mistakes everyone makes in Zakopane
Five mistakes that cost time, money or safety in Zakopane, and what to do instead.
- Morskie Oko
- Closed to traffic
- Krupówki
- Souvenirs and kiosks, not a mountain
- The cable car
- Booking recommended

The biggest mistakes in Zakopane come from how the day is planned: people look for a car where none is allowed, climb the ridge when the weather says not to, and mistake the main street for the reason they came. Below, a better move for each.
1. Driving to Morskie Oko
The last nine kilometres of road to the lake are closed to traffic, so a car does not help there — it only needs somewhere to park, and the car park fills by seven in the morning. Instead, take the bus to Palenica Białczańska, then walk 2 h uphill, or take a horse cart for a fee if you would rather not climb.

2. Climbing Giewont in the afternoon
The ridge is exposed, and the last stretch runs along chains bolted into the rock. Afternoon lightning up there makes the news most years, and the winter section is formally shut too, 1 Dec–15 May (winter section via Grzybowiec Pass). Instead, start in the morning and come down before the clouds build.

3. Stopping at Krupówki and thinking that is Zakopane
Krupówki is a street of souvenirs, kiosks and music — not the reason you came to Zakopane. What is worth seeing lies beyond it: Zakopane Style houses, the old Pęksowy Brzyzek cemetery, and the Tatras themselves. Instead of a long stroll down it, walk it once and move on.

4. Turning up for the cable car without a ticket
The Tatra National Park allows at most 180 riders an hour up Kasprowy Wierch in summer and 360 in winter, which in practice works as a daily cap — tickets for popular slots run out. Booking is recommended; without it you either queue or do not go up at all. Instead, buy the ticket ahead at pkl.pl.
5. Arriving in the shoulder season and counting on the cable car
The cable car shuts every year for a few weeks of technical inspection, in spring or autumn — this autumn from 5 to 14 November 2026 (pkl.pl). Instead of building it into your plan ahead of time, check the current schedule at pkl.pl before you travel if you are coming outside the two main seasons.

Before you go
Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.
Can you reach Morskie Oko by car?
No. The last nine kilometres of road are closed to traffic — you take a bus, then walk or ride a horse cart.
When is it dangerous to climb Giewont?
In the afternoon, because of lightning on the exposed ridge. Start in the morning and come down early.
Is Krupówki worth the time?
Briefly, yes — a way through between the trails and the museums, rather than a destination in itself.
