Where to go: five more questions →

The best time for Zakopane is June–September (hiking), January–March (snow). Those are two separate seasons, each with its own reason to come. Between them is a shoulder season when the trails either still hold snow or are already muddy, and when the Kasprowy Wierch cable car shuts for maintenance.

Two seasons, not one

Zakopane does not live off a single time of year. Summer keeps every trail open, and the Kasprowy Wierch cable car runs its summer schedule, 4 Jun–30 Sep. Winter keeps the snow for skiing, but shuts Giewont's winter section over the chains bolted into the rock, 1 Dec–15 May (winter section via Grzybowiec Pass). Both periods sit inside June–September (hiking), January–March (snow), each with its own reason for coming.

May

The crossing that gets skipped

May sits between the two seasons and is the least reliable month for Zakopane — it is wet, and the trails in the Tatras stay muddy. If hiking is all you are here for, push the trip to June instead.

The shoulder season

The cable car under maintenance

The Kasprowy Wierch cable car shuts every year for a few weeks of technical inspection, in spring or in autumn — this autumn from 5 to 14 November 2026 (pkl.pl). The exact dates change from year to year, so if you are planning a trip outside the two main seasons in another year, check the current schedule at pkl.pl before you build the cable car into your plan.
