Where to stay in Zakopane

Where to go: five more questions →

In Zakopane you choose between the centre around Krupówki and the southern edge of town, towards Kuźnice, where the trail to Giewont and the base of the Kasprowy Wierch cable car both start. You choose by what you do morning and evening — an early start on the trail or an evening on the doorstep. A hostel bed is €21–26, a three-star hotel room €31–37 per person.

The centre around Krupówki: for evenings out

Outside the door is the main street, with kiosks, restaurants and music that does not stop until late in season. Everything is a walk away — the shop, dinner, the bus station — and the morning starts without a rush, since the station is close too. The price is sleep: a room on the street itself, or near it, hears the music past midnight.

It suits short stays, anyone not planning an early start on the trail, and dinner without a drive. It does not suit anyone getting up at six for the first bus to Morskie Oko.

Kuźnice and the south end: for an early start on the trail

Outside the door is a quieter street, closer to the forest than to the kiosks. The trail to Giewont and the base of the Kasprowy Wierch cable car are ten minutes' walk from here, instead of a ride from the centre. The price is dinner — restaurants are fewer and pricier than around Krupówki, and the street empties out after nine.

It suits hikers for whom every morning minute counts. It does not suit anyone who wants an unplanned dinner outdoors.

For one night

For a single night, pick the centre. The closeness of restaurants and the station then outweighs ten minutes on the trail, and the morning is easily made up with an earlier alarm.

  • Do not plan a car for the sake of your room. Neither the centre nor Kuźnice needs its own transport — everything that matters is a bus ride or a walk away.
