Debrecen fits into a day if the plan is the main street, Piac utca, up to the Great Reformed Church and the museums around it, or two if Nagyerdő, the forest with the zoo and the thermal baths, gets added. It is Hungary's second-largest city and for centuries the centre of Hungarian Calvinism; in the Great Church in 1849 Lajos Kossuth proclaimed the dethronement of the Habsburgs.

The walk runs in one direction: from the station up Piac utca to the square in front of the Great Church, then into the neighbouring Reformed College, founded in 1538, and on to the Déri Museum. That fits into one morning; the afternoon belongs to Nagyerdő, where forest, zoo and the Aquaticum thermal bath sit one after another. The best time to come, Apr–Jun · Sep, is also the pleasantest for a walk through the forest.

Debrecen has an airport of its own, DEB, and the Airport 1 bus reaches the main station in 11 min to Nagyállomás. From Budapest there is also a direct train, from about 2 h 35 min.
