Debrecen is seen along a single line: the station, Piac utca, the square with the church, then on into the forest to the north. This plan cuts that line into two days: the first circles the church and the museums, the second the zoo and the baths.
Piac utca, the church and the museums
From the main station along Piac utca into the centre; tram 1 runs the same way, though the square is also an easy walk. Walking it free.
The Great Reformed Church, on the square at the end of the street; independence from the Habsburgs was proclaimed in it in 1849. Entry on tour A €4.14 (tour A) (hours: Sep–Oct Mon–Fri 9–16, Sat 9–13, Sun 12–16), no booking needed.
The Reformed College, right beside the church: a school from 1538, a university today, with a museum in the building.
Lunch in the centre, €6.90–7.15 for a set menu.
The Déri Museum: Munkácsy paintings, Egyptian antiquities, weapons from Europe and Asia. Entry €7.73, open Tue–Sun 10–18.
Dinner in the centre, a main course in an ordinary restaurant €10–16.

Nagyerdő does not belong in day one. The forest, the zoo and the baths want an afternoon to themselves, while the church and the museums take the morning and the early afternoon.
Nagyerdő: the zoo and the baths
Tram 1 from the centre to Nagyerdő, the forest north of the centre that holds the zoo and the thermal bath. Ticket €1.32–1.38.
The zoo, adult entry €13.52.
Lunch in the forest or back towards the centre.
Aquaticum, the thermal bath; the afternoon ticket is cheaper than the full-day one (€13.52 on a weekday).

With only one day, stay in the centre and ride the tram to the forest just to see it, skipping the zoo and the baths.
