Debrecen has an airport of its own and a main station on the same line as the centre, so the way to a bed takes a single ride. Here is the whole route, step by step, up to the square with the church.
From DEB airport to the station
Debrecen Airport is inside the city. From it to the main station, Nagyállomás, runs city bus Airport 1: the ride takes 11 min to Nagyállomás, and the ticket costs €1.32–1.38, the same as any city ride. From the station, Piac utca leads into the centre.

From Budapest by train
Anyone arriving through the capital takes a direct train to Debrecen; the fastest connection runs about 2 h 35 min. From Debrecen the same line carries on towards Hortobágy and the other day trips.

Around town
The centre is walked: Piac utca, the Great Church, the College and the Déri Museum lie along the same stretch. Tram 1 runs from the station through the centre to Nagyerdő, with a stop near the baths; it takes you to the zoo and Aquaticum. A single ride costs €1.32–1.38, a 24-hour ticket €4.69.
