Where to stay in Vienna
In Vienna the area is chosen by U-Bahn line: inside the Ring everything is on foot, Neubau sits closer to the nightlife, Leopoldstadt is cheaper with a longer ride in.

Vienna has no area chosen for a river view or a beach — it is chosen by how much you walk and how much you ride the U-Bahn. Three areas cover almost every case: inside the Ring for a first visit, Neubau for a longer stay near the museums and the nightlife, Leopoldstadt when price decides.
Inside the Ring — the shortest walk to everything
Stephansplatz, where lines U1 and U3 cross, sits at the heart of the first district: the Stephansdom, the Hofburg and both large museums are ten to fifteen minutes away on foot. This is the area where a three-day plan barely needs transport at all, and it is also the most expensive; bed prices rise the closer they sit to the cathedral.

Neubau — the MuseumsQuartier and Mariahilferstrasse
Neubaugasse station on line U3 sits halfway between the Westbahnhof and the MuseumsQuartier, and the next stop towards the centre, Volkstheater, also carries line U2. Neubau is a residential, craft-shop district with boutiques and bars that don't run just for visitors, so a longer stay here feels less like the same street twice. The Ring is one stop away.

Leopoldstadt — by the Prater, cheaper
Praterstern, where lines U1 and U2 cross, sits at the entrance to the Prater. The second district is greener and quieter than the centre, with a lower bed price at the same distance from the Ring. The drawback is the flip side of the appeal: evenings are quieter here, and anyone out for a coffee house late walks back across the bridge or takes one stop on the metro.

What to check before booking
- What matters is distance to the nearest U-Bahn stop. Two listings equally far from Stephansplatz on the map can be five minutes' walk from a stop or twenty.
- The tourist tax doesn't show in the price displayed. For a three-star hotel it is 5% of the room rate (excl. VAT and breakfast), paid on the spot.
- An address labelled 'central' that actually sits outside the Ring. Vienna has no formal neighbourhood boundary in a street name — check the exact U-Bahn stop on a map before booking.
For a three-star hotel it is 5% of the room rate (excl. VAT and breakfast), and it does not show in the price a booking site quotes upfront — it is asked for at the desk.

Before you go
Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.
Which area is best for a first stay in Vienna?
Inside the Ring, around Stephansplatz — every main sight is walkable, and it has the densest U-Bahn network.
Is Leopoldstadt far from the centre?
No — Praterstern station is one or two stops from Stephansplatz, on line U1 or U2.
How much do you save staying in Leopoldstadt instead of inside the Ring?
The bed price is the same everywhere in the city (€15–40 for a dorm); the saving in Leopoldstadt comes from wider supply and lower demand.
