The best time to visit Zagreb

Zagreb is continental with no sea to soften the summer: July averages above 23°C, January drops below zero, and April–June and September–October strike the best balance of weather and crowds.

Where to go: five more questions →

Zagreb is chosen by two things: whether the city sits at a bearable temperature, and whether Sljeme above it holds snow or open trails. Apr–Jun · Sep–Oct (Dec for Advent) deliver both — a city without the peak of summer or the cold of winter, and a mountain that is at its most predictable then. The exact figures for each month sit in the table that follows.

Summer is hot, with no sea to soften it

July's daily average is 23.5°C, August's 22.5°C, and that average covers the whole day, including the cooler morning and evening. Zagreb is a continental city, with no sea to take the edge off the heat the way the Croatian coast has, so the outdoor stops of the day (the Upper Town, Dolac, Lenuci's Horseshoe) are done in the morning, and the indoor ones (the Museum of Broken Relationships, the MSU) after midday.

May carries the most rain

May averages fifteen rainy days, more than any other month — it does not spoil the city, since the museums and the market work through rain, but it changes trips outside it: the trails on Medvednica and the drive to Plitvice are a different outing in fog and wet, so the forecast that morning matters more than the calendar.

Sljeme in winter, with snow when there is any

The winter season on Sljeme follows the snow, year after year. The Crveni spust run, usually in early January, hosts a women's World Cup slalom race, part of a competition held on this mountain since 2005. The cable car runs all year (€10 return), and what changes is only whether the top has snow for skiing or bare trails for walking.

Advent in December

Zagreb's Advent market was named Europe's best Christmas market by European Best Destinations three years running, 2016 to 2018, and it has been the main reason for a winter visit since. The crowds are bigger than in November or January, but December rooms are not the year's most expensive — May is.
