Where to go: five more questions →

Day trips from Zagreb split into one whole day and several halves: Plitvice is a whole day and nothing else, Samobor is half a day, and Varaždin and Trakošćan join into one loop to the north. Everything else fits into half a day and can be combined.

Plitvice — a whole day and nothing else

Two hours each way by car, a little longer by bus. The ticket carries an entry time, so you work back from it when leaving Zagreb: for a nine o'clock slot you set off at seven. Leave at seven and you are back by evening; leave at noon and you see one route and a queue for the boat.

Samobor — the shortest

Half an hour west and the easiest way out of Zagreb. The town has a square, a stream through the middle, and cream cakes that people from Zagreb themselves drive out for — not a tourist story but a Sunday habit. Above it is Žumberak, with paths and the ruins of Samobor's old castle about twenty minutes' climb up. Half a day, and the best choice when a whole one is not available.

Varaždin and Trakošćan

Varaždin is an hour and a quarter north and was Croatia's capital in the eighteenth century, until the town burned in 1776. What remains is a baroque core with a castle and a cemetery laid out as a park. Trakošćan is some forty kilometres further west, about fifty minutes' drive: a castle on a hill above a lake, with an hour's path around the water. They join into a loop — Zagreb, Varaždin, Trakošćan and back — and that is how they are done.

What does not combine

  • Plitvice with anything. Four hours of driving and at least two in the park, plus the queue for the boat, leave no room even for coffee on the way back.
  • Varaždin without Trakošćan. An hour and a quarter each way for one baroque square is out of proportion; fifty minutes more at the wheel adds a castle, and from Trakošćan you drive straight back to Zagreb.

Frequently asked

Before you go

Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.

Can Plitvice be done from Zagreb in half a day?

Not sensibly. It is two hours each way, and even the shortest route in the park takes two to three hours — that is a full day, and it is planned as one.

Do I need to book Plitvice?

Yes. The ticket carries an entry time and is bought ahead, and the departure from Zagreb is worked out from it.

Which trip is best with only half a day?

Samobor. Half an hour's drive, a square, a stream and a path above the town — plus the cream cakes people from Zagreb drive out for.
