Where to go: five more questions →

A day in Zagreb costs €21–41 per person with a hostel bed, a gablec, dinner in an inexpensive restaurant and two coffees, and €77–142 with a hotel room for two and a mid-range dinner. The night makes almost all of the difference; food separates the two profiles only by the dinner, eighteen euros at most, and transport barely registers.

The hotel is the city average from the cheapest month (January) to the dearest (May), for a room shared by two. The other items are the price range in the sources.

The gablec and dinner

A gablec is a daily lunch menu, with a dish that changes every day; most offers in the city are €7–12. Dinner in a restaurant is €12–30, from an inexpensive place to three mid-range courses, so even the cheapest costs as much as the dearest gablec. That is why a frugal day takes its hot meal at midday and a lighter dinner, not the other way round.

Coffee and public transport

Coffee in a café is €1.70–2.50. Two a day cost more than two rides on public transport, so in this city coffee is a bigger item than transport.

Getting aroundThe shuttle, bus and tram from the airport to the centre:Getting around Zagreb →

A 30-minute ticket is €0.53, a 60-minute one €0.93, and a day ticket €3.98. The day ticket only pays from the fifth hour-long ride; walk the centre and use public transport only to Mirogoj and back, and two single tickets do the job.
